Ok, so this is the first year I will clip her out (leaving legs on). While hairy she has worn a lightwieght TO or middle TO throughout the Winter. Only ever needed a 200g stable rug at night (varying between a sheet up to 200g). She only wore her H/W turnout in the snow and -5 down to the -12 that we had here. She isn't a hairy, hairy cob but obviously she will need something different this Winter as it will all be gone!

I only have one H/W turnout. With her being clipped is it likely that she will now need to wear a H/W through more of the Winter and I should get another one as a second rug to allow for drying time.

I know it is difficult to say as it will depend on various factors, I will obviously see how she is and feel her but if anyone could give me an idea of their experiences with clipped out cobs I would be grateful.

For my clipped Horse she has a fleece, non necked medium stable, necked medium stable, non fill necked LW TO, Medium non necked (she lived in this all winter even when clipped), medium necked and 1 HW TO which she hardly wore as is a very hot Horse (ISH) for drying I always leave her wet rugs on. Saves time rugging in the mornings plus dries faster. Aslong as they are dry underneath they will be fine.

This is what I do, as the winter gets colder I always increase the rugs. Stable sheet light weight after clipping stable sheet with quilted rug on top. Turn out rug either quilted or with a quilted rug beneath. However we only full clip those who are hunting weekly, and those in light work trace or blanket clip.

I layer my horses, if you have a m/w and need to use it in an emergency leave a stable rug under it, the same if the weather gets very cold you can put another rug under the h/w.
The winter when we had the serious snow mine wore stable rugs with t/o on top plus neck rugs they went out in this arrangement then a quick take off and back on for the night.
If I were you I would get enough m/w so you have more options and can use the rugs through warmer weather not just midwinter.

Thanks BP - I think layering will be my friend this Winter. It just occurred to me that I could just stable rug under her m/w rather than buying another h/w. I am a doofus sometimes!
