Hi Guys,

Just wanted to pick your brains a bit, it was bens first clip this year and bless him he looked so smart, but I came across a bit of an issue when rugging him when he is clipped and wondered if anyone had had the same issue and managed to fix it. His coat is always in good nick with a nice amount of natural grease. When I take his rug off its like all the hairs have been rubbed the wrong way, they are still there but sort of standing up on end, almost like I've got a brush and brushed against the growth, it's all over both white and brown areas :( his rug fits fine and the other day I came across a woman who has a horse who's coat does the same thing, but only in one patch, she has tried numerous rugs to no avail. Any ideas, I would say its pretty uncomfortable having all his hairs squiffy when they should be lying flat! All I can think of is he is a bit of a wolly mammoth and perhaps the hairs are coarse and catching (?) although I've had horses with far coarser coats and never had this issue, and it may well not be this because the other woman's horse is a full tb so generally a fine coat.

Any ideas?

do you use a cotton or nylon lined rug?
Nylon lined usually lays the coats and imo are better than the cotton lined which are more likely to catch the hairs.

Hmm just left yard so will check tomorrow although I think it's nylon but will check... It's a mark Todd medium weight perhaps someone on here knows what the lining is? Now the hair is longer it doesn't do this but it was awful after he'd been clipped although he does have the longer guard type hairs... Perhaps these aren't helping

Is it this Mark Todd Mediumweight rug? If so, it says "Mediumweight - 250g filing with a cotton lining."

When you say that "the hairs have been rubbed the wrong way", does it mean that it is as if they're a little static? If so and if you can give him a bath, you could try with using conditioner after shampooing or maybe it would be easier to try with washing the rug, and using fabric softener, to see if that helps.

Could it be that the rug is too heavyweight? I just know that when I have misjudged the weather and left mine in a heavier rug than really needed, his coat is often ruffled like he's slightly sweated and it's dried. Just an idea. :)

Could it be static? I think if he was generally uncomfortable he would have let you know by now. Don't know if it is the weather or what but I have had more static shocks in the last few weeks than in my entire life and I would imagine a nylon rug would have the same effect.

Ah, great, yes mt med weight so cotton! To be honest, it could be static but although I know he has a greasy coat... Like, tres greasy! It makes it look really coarse... But either way, conditioner would probably help, I will try it!

It was one med weight and he was fully clipped, I don't think that was the problem, infact with just the mw he was looking a bit tucked up so I ended up putting another layer on for a while.

I had this exact problem when putting a fleece under his rugs, a silkier lined rug fixed it for me
Yes initially the extra layer was a fleece and this made it worse, in the end I changed to putting a stable rug under his mw and it was not as bad but it wasn't great!

I don't know, I'm still learning to read him after 3 years! Honestly, he is more of a mare than ebony ever was! Proper grouch when he wants to be:p. his coat is longer now so it's not an issue but next year I'm going to have to watch out for it... At the very least its unsightly! But you are right, nylon could be just as much of a problem with static as cotton could with rubbing the coat the wrong way!

The exact reason I dont use cotton linings... nylon is much better and polishes as they move :)
