Went up field, Samba has no rug on, think bloody fantastic its been nicked (wouldnt be the first time)................................

Found it, all surcingles and front buckles done up. Not broken and Samba doesnt have a scratch on her. (shes a bit of a TB when it comes to injuries always overreaching/brushing etc). Its v windy so I wonder if it got up over her head some how but im pretty sure she would have paniced?

Has anyone actually caught their pony in the act of getting a rug off in one piece??

Never caught them in the act. But just got back from the yard and found my yearling Bailey rugless in the field! found his rug all done up no damage. Didnt have a headcollar to hand and i am so pleased as he stood as good as gold in gale force winds while i put it back on bless him!!

Does it have a fillet string or leg straps? My old cob ued to pull her rug off in the fence daily: she's wiggle against it until it caught then pull backwards with her head down to drag it off, stamping on it with glee as it got round her front legs. Just the fillet string meant nothing at the back to keep it on. Attatching proper leg straps foiled her :D

I looked out of the window one afternoon and thought, "Wow, I didn't make a bad job of that clip!" - then realised the clip should have been totally covered by a rug! ;) I too thought that some bugger had stolen it, and found it just as you described. I think when it is very windy, if there is no fillet string, or the tail gets the wrong side of it, it is relatively easy for the rug to blow off over their head in one piece. it's happened again since, and although I've never seen it, the horses didn't seem at all bothered, just relieved to have their coat back on!

Yeah if there's strong winds and the fillet string has come off or somehow the tail's got over it then, when they put their heads down to graze the rug can blow over their heads. My sister's pony used to get his rug off in the stable though - straps all done up. Not quite sure how he did that one!

I found my fully clipped mare rugless last year. It was a new shires combo and she'd only had it on 4times. Went up to get her in and no rug, it was all in one peice, surcingles were done up and it was covered in mud. The only thing that was wrong was one of the leg straps had snapped :)

I dont use leg straps after she clipped herself to the fence (a much better alternative to strip grazing if I do say so my self :) )

I think it must have just blown over her head. Toffee did it years ago to a under rug.

Love it !!!
And yes had a 2 year old that used to take rug off (2 front chest / x-surcingsles and 2xleg straps) often found it int he field with ALL straps still intact - no idea how at all.

I started to find the rather elderly (34 yr old) Shetland shivering in the nip , with his rug off- buckles and straps all done up. I then caught the naughty 2 year olds he was out with, grabbing it by the top and just pulling it straight over his head!

My horse's rug came off the other night because the fillet string was broken (kept meaning to fix it but hadn't got round to it) and we had a really windy night. I felt really bad when I imagined him struggling around with his rug flapping over his head, and put a new fillet string on straight away! I'm glad he's such a chilled-out boy, because if he'd panicked while it was halfway off he could have hurt himself.

I used to have an old sec b, who knew all the tricks.I saw him lie down for a roll, then slide out of his NZ(scabby canvas thing, was years ago),while upside down!Once he got his head out the rug just slid off,and the rug was left with all staps and buckles including leg straps still fastened on the ground while the pony headed off to roll in a muddy puddle.Only way to keep the rug on,and pony clean enough to ride was to put a roller over it!

I don't know HOW they do it, but my pony got his top rug off overnight in the stable before Christmas. The only thing that was not done up was the fillet string. Somehow he must have limbo-ed out of it, which is no mean feat in a 10x12 stable. He looked very pleased with himself!!

I think it helps if the rugs have the "slippy" linings... Certainly the only 2 times I've known this happen, the rugs did have that sort of lining.

Mouse used to do this. No idea how. I always full/hunter clipped him so although he was a native, he needed rugging.

I bought him a Rambo with attached neck. Two Velcro straps on the neck, clip fastenings on the chest, three surcingles and leg straps (reasonably tight).

All of them were still done up and no idea how he did it. Happened several times as well!!!
