my 17 year old new forest mare always tries to bite me when i put on any of her rugs. it is really annoying and she never used to do it. why is she doing it and how can i stop it?
Its not a great deal of information to go on but I would guess she is trying to tell you she isn't happy. Could she be too warm with rugs at this time of year? Could they have been washed in a new detergent which is itchy or irritating to her? Does the rug fit well or has she changed shape which might make it uncomfortable? Is it rubbing or pressing on her? might her back or wiithers be sore? Is she having a difficult season and is a bit sensitive?
The first thing is to figure out what is cuasing her protest. Once you do she may well stop. If you hand feed treats or anything like that - stop. If you have polos or something in your pocket - take them out. There are tricks to discourage a persistant biter - but as this is a new behaviour it would be betetr to figure out why she is doing it rather than punish her for it first off.
And ask admin to delete the thread you strated by mistake in competition & training.
Is she stiff at all? My elderly mare made it clear when she became more arthritic that she did not like wearing a rug with leg straps. She seemed to find it more difficult to get her legs in the right position for heaving herself up when she had rolled. We ended up not rugging her at all for the last couple of years.
