my haffy lives out, i have just checked the weather and it is going to go down to -7 on tuesday and wednesday.
my haffy is currently in a lightweight turnout yes I am evil, do I need to use a different rug he is a very big haffy with alot of weight.
what do I do
what rugs are yours in.

If he is over weight then I'd say leave him in the lightweight, but if he is a nice weight id just stick a 200g rug on him. IMO.

I only ever put a lightweight on mine if it's very wet as he gets rainscald. He's not rugged now as while it's very cold it's dry and he needs to lose some (a lot!) of weight.

he was made to live in low temps with no rug!!!! a lightweight is just fine if he is fat and shiny, enough to break the weather and keep him dry!! give him a bit of extra hay if very very cold and make sure his water is available!!!

Mines not rugged! Last year she sweated in her lightweight rug and she was really itchy and uncomfortable, thought it may of been rainscald or sweatscald! She seems ok at the moment

Tell him his genes date back to living in the Austrian Tyrol where they have thick snow and freezing temperatures for 11 months, 3 weeks and 6 days of every year. Then slap any old thing on him and leave him to it!

My Haffie mare is also fat as a pig. She comes in at night to keep my other horse company and I have been putting a stable rug on when it's been below zero, but she has nothing on in the field. I was in Austria last year in February and there were lots of Haffies in the mountains - and not one had a rug on and it was way below freezing!
