Just wondering what make of rugs are best suited for the Irish draught chunky types! I love my Rambo/amigo/rhinos for my TB but think they may be too tight across chest for him, does anyone else use horseware rugs on theirs? I don't mind paying a bit extra for good quality ones. I need a LW and MW stable and a LW and MW turnout without neck covers or maybe detatchable! Any suggestions would be great. He norm takes a 7ft, thanks in advance x

I've found horseware rugs good, and I had a Fal for my old mare who was built like a tank! I found Premier equine rubbed my geldings shoulders slightly but he was in his amigo all winter with no ill effects.

I use Amigo for my idxtb. She's big but not full id. Got two lw and two mw with same detachable hoods. The rugs look right on her, although the belly straps on one are a bit short?! But not tight. Tried other rugs - weatherbeta, masta - and the fronts look like they're a size too small so am sticking with Amigo. Oh, and I also have a hw orican that I've rarely use but that fits her too. She takes 7ft.

I have 17hh shire X and 7' rugs horseware fit her well. Derbyhouse rugs fit her but the fastenings aren't very robust and tend to break. A friend who has a big mare swears by Fal and that's what I'm going to get my mare next.

I use the rambo supreme on my lad for TO in the winter (he's fully clipped.) and the rambo LW TO sheet in the spring annd autumn. Almost everything else ive tried has been far far far too tight on his chest.
He has a really cheap masta stable rug which he has a fleece under. It doesn't seem to rub, but then its two layers and the fleece has slippy material on the inside at the front.
my sisters horse has a fal stable rug but he's not as wide as Ron.

i use weatherbeeta rugs on my id he seems to like them cause with him bein 17.1 just about some rugs come really short up his legs but the weatherbeeta ones cover alot i think

Thanks everyone. Looks like the horseware and fal are the way to go! Shocked that the horseware ones would fit as they fit my tb ever so snuggly, pleased though as I love them! As for the fal, iv never used them. Anyone got any feedback on them? Are they as durable as the Rambos etc? Thanks x

ive used Fal rugs for my chunky horse for years and they are a fantastic fit .I think they are far better quality than Horseware.

Horseware rugs are too narrow, far too small on the neck and shoulders and dont fit at all well.

IMO Fal are far far better, well worth the extra money, i wouldnt use anything else

Hi there !

I have a 16hh RID Mare ( quite chunky!) and I find that Shires rugs fit her perfectly. I have tried on one of the FAL rugs which belongs to a friend and this did fit really well, but I find them rather too expensive

Love the Shires ones though !!

I have a 17.3hh ID x TB and seem to be still having probs with finding rugs to fit him. The rugs he came with seem rather tight (all varying in size from 6"9 to 7"1).

I have brought him a Weatherbeeta fly rug and decided to go slightly big and stupidly jumped to 7"6. The rug fits brill around the girth but is too long. If I were to go down to 7"3 I was wondering if I would lose both length and girth! Does anyone have any ideas? all his other rugs look like mini skirts

Ive got a full ID who's really substantial, especially when he's in work. The best I've found for him are Premier Equine ones with the detachable neck. Also ok are Jumpers Horse Line & Masta Check Tech.

Weatherbeeta rub him raw across the shoulders, they just aren't wide enough. Shires were ok when he was younger but now the top strap sits far too high & again they aren't wide enough.

I've also got a Masta contour stable rug that's a really nice fit on him - lovely & deep with plenty of room around the neck.

Bri has come with a Masta that fits him better then the others so may try the next size up and see if that works better!

How come everything seems to come at once tho, new hat, rugs and all my cleaning equipment is at an all time low lol

my friend has a full breed irish draught (true to breed) who is built like a tank the only rugs she can buy for him are fal rugs and even then she needs a chest extender for some of the rugs
