Our horses stay out with rugs in the Winter(and have never been better since doing this,)....but does anyone have a suggestion for stopping them from biting and tearing off the rugs?

Bought 3 new rugs this Autumn and had to already replace one yesterday...

I was thinking along the lines of something repulsive that I could spray on the back and hind end of the rug so they wouldn't be so TASTY and fun to pull at?

This Winter could be expensive!

my stallion was the same chewing rugs got some stop chew spray wotked a treat but does tend to get on your hands when doing the rugs awful taste but worth it

My youngster tears and hangs onto the tail flap of Fly's rug. I have put Cribbox on it (lasts for about a week), that soon stopped him. Trouble is he has started in another area now! Will have to do each area at a time until he gets the message!

Yes it does, can't remember the name but your local tack shop should know.

Have a nice weekend

My rugs used to get destroyed too, I tried cribbox and another one, think it was called 'no bite'??? but i cant say they worked great and I was putting it on daily. I was going through loads so I ended up mixing English mustard with warm water and putting it in a spray bottle. It just needed a good shake afterwards and lasted ages. Im not sure if I should have done this or not but I found it worked as good as the bought ones and the culprit came to no harm at all. Had to laugh though as the owner used it one day, thinking it was fly spray

Someone told me to use chilli but I just couldnt have done that. The English Mustard certainly smelt fowl and I started with a couple of teaspoons to a jug of water just incase and increased it. The culprit still tugged at my rug whilst playing but I got no more rips as I presume it didnt taste that good..
The best thing I did though was replacing my rugs with expensive Rambo's or anything Ballistic Nylon. It broke my heart buying them just incase he shredded them but my Rambos on its 3rd winter now and totally in one piece. One of my other rugs lasted just 2 weeks, that was a 600 denier material. Our horses were so bad my boy is sadly now grazing alone as during there play fighting his leg was fractured. I do feel sorry for him but hey no more ripped rugs or injured horses.
Good luck, I hope it deters them a bit.

Thanks again...I might go down and check out a Rambo...I have Rambo rugs for when he was stabbled...Often when trying to save money on inferior quality products(I got a deal on the first 3,) you end up spending more money in the end...

Usually I know this....

cheers
