I share a horse. The owner insists he keeps on lots of rugs whether he is in or out as he is fine and drops weight easily so he has to stay warm. As a result he has a bad sore on his withers that wont go away. The sore is kept very clean but it is just pink skin as the hair can't grow back through because of the rugs being constantly on. It's catch 22 as it is so cold that he does need to be fully rugged. Is there anything I can do or put on it? I really need some help as he is very sensitive in this area now. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Check that the rugs fit. If they do & they're still rubbing here's a tried & tested (by me!!) solution.
Get two large square sponges & some Copydex glue. Stick the sponges to the inside of the rug either side of the withers in such as position as to lift the rug off the affected area. Hey presto - pressure relieved problem solved. If the horse is prone to rubs you could also glue some satiny material onto the sponges (again using the copydex).

Im presuming he has quite high withers as my Baron gets rubbed withers and his are huge, his are not that bad and the hair is just a little shorter. I just bought a Bossy Bib, hes had it on 2 weeks and its fab. I have tried lots of rugs and no matter how well the rest of it fits him he always gets little rubs on his withers.

Cairo has high withers and get can the same type of rub as you.

He now wears a bossy bib and had megatek rubbed in the bald spot - result - hair has grown back and he looks good as new. I keep on with the megatek every other day and he wears his bib all the time he has a rug on.

Thanks for all your great advice.

Just following on from this, because his withers have been so sore he shudders if you touch anywhere near the withers. The shudder stays even when the sore is healed. Any ideas? Is it because he is genuinely still in pain or could it just be habit. If so how do I stop it?

Any advice and comments would be great! Thanks for all your help so far!!
