Rug Rub on Withers, won't heal

My friends horse has a rub on the top of his withers from an ill fitting rug (only wore it one day, but has made his withers bleed).

Anyway, offending rug is no longer in use and old one which fits is back on, but as the rub is covered all the time, it is not healing.

Any ideas how to keep horsey warm (fully clipped) whilst letting air get to the withers to let it heal?

Thanks!

Stitch a piece of real sheepskin over the withers on the rug...it should help, you could also smear a bit of vaseline on the rub, but you may find that until the spring comes & he can go out without a rug it may not heal properly.

use tea tree mist on the rub and once scabbed over use cornicrsin to help the hair grow back quick, sheep skins good to stop rugs rubbing

not sure about how to help the wound but when it is heeled consider one of those lycra hoods. prevents rugs rubbing manes, withers and shoulders. although they are time consuming

It happened to my friends horse, she just left hers without a rug for a few hours so that the air could get to it and it could scab over! The weather is so mild at the min her fully clipped horse was fine!
