My thin skinned TB has a sore on each hip from her fly rug. She was unwell and lost a lot of weight so they stuck out, and before I knew it, the skin was off and they were raw and bleeding even without the rug on!
She has been in and out of the vet hospital for other reasons over the last few weeks so obviously they have been cleaning them and applying flamazine, and I have been doing the same but they just aren't healing. Every time she rolls any scab that was there just comes straight off.

She's not worn a rug since she got them (maybe once in the rain) but is out 24/7 and she will need one overnight soon.

I have tried sticking a cotton pad on them with tape but this just comes off when she rolls too. They do heal ok with what we are doing so it's not the wound management that I'm struggling with, just need something to put on them which will stay so that her rolling and wearing a rug isn't going to rub them again so they can heal properly. She's had them for about 6 weeks now so really need to get them healed before she's in a rug all the time.

Pictures don't show the wounds very well but you can see where they are. eb h.jpgEbony H.jpgebs h.jpg

Does anyone have any suggestions?

My ex racer was prone to these when he arrived, he would roll on a rough bit of the field and pull the scabs off. do you think it was the texture of the fly rug that is adding to the problem? would the smooth lining of a TO actually make it a bit easier on the skin?

Yes I do think the mesh of the fly rug was the problem. She had/has lymphangitis so we were walking her a lot, and I didn't think to take the fly rug off when we were doing laps of the field so the extra movement in the fly rug was what did it - completely my fault for not taking it off as the same fly rug was fine last year! That is a good point actually - maybe wearing a turnout might be more protection than no rug at all?

it certainly stopped Darcy knocking his skin off on pebbles  hopefully as she fills out again it will sort of solve itself, the boney ones are so hard to protect aren't they.

Would Alluspray help? It might make the lining of your rug a bit messy but maybe spray in the morning and leave the rug off until evening.

Can you tack silk inside a light rug? This should skim and not stick. I did this when an oldie scraped their quarters open by not negotiating a metal slip rail..... it did help once we could put a rug on. (Oh, this was a rehab, not mine and did it prior to arriving at my yard!)
Worth checking out headscarves in charity shops. Hope you find a remedy to suit.
