I bought my new horse a light-weight Landa Freestyle combo rug in 6'6" (his size) and he's worn it for one night and has come in with two 50p size sores on both points of his hips. Very sore, and he's having to stay in today. He's clipped so I can't leave him out over night without a rug on, so he'll have to go out during the day when it's warm and come in at night until I can find a solution.

The rug was not on tightly so I am bermused as to why this has happened. The rug is even fully lined inside with nylon.

I've ordered him a Rambo Exel rug in 6'6" and am praying this solves the rubbing problem, as he also is getting rubs across his chest on both sides.

Assuming the Exel rubs, would a lycra body suit prevent the outer rug rubbing? Or would the outer rug eventually wear holes in the Lycra. I am at my wits end. Never had this problem before.

I think its a case of getting a rug that fits his shape more, there used to be a horse on our yard that suffered from the same problem, fitted like a glove eveywhere else but was taught across his hip bones, some rugs are more generous around the bottom area than others and shaped a little better with the darts etc

It sounds as though he's very thin skinned. Did the previous owner have this problem too? A lycra body suit may be worth a try.
My TB has a rug rub on his withers & is living out. I recently put his lightweight back on because of the rain & its got worse again. I'm going to leave the rug off now despite the rain & give it some air.

There is aromatherpy oil that is good for hair growth where bold patches are. Its called 'roman chamomile' It can either be applied externally or orally but it has to be well diluted before. hope this helps =]

It's the nylon! Buy a couple of silk handkerchies and sew them to the lining only. Also loosen th eleg straps to their loosest. Are you crossing the leg straps from one side to the other or just twisting them together. Twisting together should keep rug in place.
