Rug shopping help please- PE or Shires?

Hi folks, I am shopping for a new turnout rug for my boy. Do the neck covers on the PE Buster stay in the right place? I have an amigo turnout which always flips up at the base so it let's the rain in. I bought him in yesterday and his shoulders were soaked.
So do the separate neck covers stay put or should I get an integrated one instead?
I've always like the option of taking the neck cover off do never had an integrated one before.
Or do I just get a Shires one coz it's cheaper?!

Hi,, My PE neck covers stay in place, never had a problem with rain getting in, they are fab rugs and def worth the money in my opinion :)
 
Just to balance this thread out... I hate PE rugs.

I had one and it leaked in light drizzle even though it was new. The fit was definitely suited to much chunkier types than I own, with huge long surcingles that hung down loose even on the tightest setting (they had to be sewed shorter as it would have been dangerous to leave them so baggy).

Shires on the other hand do some quality rugs. I particularly like the Typhoon which is waterproof, the surcingles did shorten to the length I needed and the chest fittings were very adaptable and would do up tight enough for my narrow chested horse. :)
 
Choosing between those 2 I would say PE, but neither would be my first choice. I try and source Bucas or Rambos, even 2nd hand I prefer to anything else :)
 
I think so much depends on the cut of the rug compared to the build of your horse. I bought a Shires for a Welsh D and it was a complete disaster - flapped around her knees and the surcingles were dangerously long. Put it on the chunky cob and still the same problem - she'd ripped the surcingles off within a night, even after I'd repositioned them. I can only conclude Shires are meant for your taller, finer type.
 
definitely PE, I got a shires for the lad initially & it lasted just one day before it was shredded to ribbons the fabric was so poor, and the weatherbeater suffered a similar fate in the same timescales :cool:. The PE seems to live up to a rough life and has some surface scuffs but not managed to tear it ... yet!

oh, and no probs with the neck either it always stays in place fine and has been totally dry even in the torrential rain we've had recently:)
 
Thanks guys, it looks pretty conclusive. I have a Shires rug (100g Tempest, I think) and have no issues with it. However all I read about the PE rugs suggests that would be a perfect fit as he is a big lump. I will bite the bullet and get shopping.
