Rug stolen off a horse in the field over last night in the freezing weather.

Please Please Please mark your rugs clearly in a contrasting colour with a postcode or a freeze mark if you want to keep them on your horse.

I know they look nice but they all get covered in mud and you know what in the end, so please paint them.

Wicked beyond belief.. You can understand someone stealing from a tackroom but off a horse? Yet they must be horsey types to handle them.
Since the last theft reported on here we have started marking all our rugs with foot high letters and the horse's names in permanent ink. The thick marker pens do a good job of making the rug unsaleable afterwards to anyone.
sooner or later someone's rugs will surface either at an auction or on ebay/adtrader, and they will get caught.
It sounds like a gang doing it to me.
What area of the country please?

Happened down South Hants I think, word of mouth from a policeman friend involved in Horsewatch he asked me to post to get people to mark their rugs, a lot of people don't like it seems to ruin their rug with white marks, but I'd rather mark them and keep them !

Some people I know use their freeze marks as they don't want people comming to their home to steal their tack as well! Plus it shows the horses themselves are marked just in case they get other ideas!!

Trouble is a horse out in fields day or night is easy prey and rugs are in demand this time of year. I also dislike horse owners who buy cheap rugs from the pub if you know what I mean!!!

It's really difficult for the police to track them down if there are no markings, so fustratingly they have to give them back!!

Don't know for sure, will try and find out but I think there is quite an active Horsewatch down there, so have a look on their website for a bulletin

Sorry to say this but marking them with paint makes absolutely no difference. All our rugs are splattered with our postcode and freezemarks so clearly that you can read them driving past on the A3 at 70pmh, but they still get stolen on a regular basis. I think they hope that you will replace them with nice new ones and forget to mark them

Whilst it might not stop theft all together, I feel that you have been very unlucky. I would certainly still encourage everybody to mark their rugs, tack, vehicles and equipment as it is the best and most visible deterrant available and certainly removes the resale value which is the biggest motivation for taking them for most thieves and it helps the police prosecute the pondscum that take and receive them!

I have had an unmarked old rug taken off a youngster and all the expensive new ones left alone!! So I was very thankfull that a few mins with a tin and a brush saved me loosing £900 worth of rugs in one go.
