this may be a daft question but I have a 180g stable rug it is 5 years old and still going strong!..... BUT it doesn't feel as thick as it did when it was new..... how do i describe it...... it doesn't feel like a MW thickness but more like a 100g! (like the jasper x lites!)

Are you still with me?

right my question.... since it is now so thin, would it be counted as a MW or a LW??

not silly at all, im looking at buying more and only want a medium weight but some say 660g / 9006 / 1200g weight some say 120g polyfill / 240g polyfill - what are the differences between weight and polyfill! i just want someone to say this - light turnout this = medium turnout this = heavy turnout but different catalogues word it / measure in different ways!

It's not just the weight of the fill that affects the warmth of the rug. The warmth is actually created by the fibres with fill the rug trapping air in amongst the fibres, and this layer of air acts as insulation.

So the fibres filling your old rug over the years will have compacted (hence why it feels different and less "puffy") and you are right that it will be more like a lightweight than a medium weight rug now.

Maybe try giving it a good shake (like a feather duvet- same principles really!) and see if that helps it puff up a bit. Or just keep it as a lightweight and supplement your rug wardrobe with a new medium weight!

Not sure about the overall weight vs. filling question. It is really frustrating that different brands word things and measure things differently!

I figured this out last year!, I sat with the catalogues and wrote all the weights down in oz and gms and then figured sort of figure out where the divisions lie. If I can find the bit of paper I will put it up.

WOW... Thanks, for that it really helps clarify the situation.

I think I will keep it as a LW stable now and buy a new MW. Gives me the perfect excuse as the "new" horse needs her own wardrobe rather than borrowing off my boys............. not that I have a rug fetish….. much!

Glad I could help! Same goes for heading up to the yard on cold mornings- many thin layers can actually be warmer than one thick jacket as the layers trap more warm air! (or even better, the "Puffa" jackets that are just preformed duvets!!)

It's mentioned on the Horseware website (I think) that their polyfill is made in a special way ("thermobonded"!) that means it springs back into it's original shape, therefore keeping the airpockets within the filling constant and so a more reliable warmth of rug.

Have to admit I'm being gradually sucked into the rug obsession! It's just so exciting looking at them all, figuring out what the marketing blurb actually means and then having them arrive all shiny and new and turn your horse out looking like they've just stepped out of a catalogue!! (for all of 5mins of course!
