Had our lightweight turnouts stolen off the horses backs in the field last night. I Have ordered new rugs today but what I can i do to deter the thieves? Does painting post-codes onto the rugs work? Someone suggested using Zip-ties on all the fastenings..

We had 3 rugs taken off our yard the other week. Fortunately for me none of them were mine - they were much more expensive than anything I have.

All my rugs now have my postcode written in large letters on the shoulder and the farm name emblazoned across the bum. I did it with a permanent marker.

The b*stards!!!

Things like this are what make me so glad one of mine won't be caught by strangers, and the other one, well, she'd fart around something silly if someone tried to handle her in the dark.

I know of someone who attached cable ties to the rug fastenings when there was a spate of rug thefts in their area. Not sure how safe that is though.

We had the same happen to a couple of horses in our field a couple of years ago, one was a clipped 25yo left all night in the rain! I have my postcode written on mine, I know some people who have a little padlock on thiers but i'm not keen on that idea.

i'v scrawled all over mine with pen and white paint - we've had them taken from the yard before.
mine says my postcode in big letters and under it 'this horse is freezemarked XYZ" on both sides....
i also make sure i hang them up with the pen/paint visable if they are in the yard

But, having done that and horsey then covers himself and rug in the lastest fashion of MUD, how do you make it stay visible?

Whatever I have tried has become invisible in mud... IS there some magic paint that is more visible through mud?!

Just make sure you hose or scrub the painted part of the rug so it does stay visible.

I wouldn't want to risk cable ties or small padlocks on rugs personally.

I use flourescent spray paint. Even if parts are covered in mud you can see that the rug is marked & it last pretty well all winter.
I have 3 (all different sizes) & I have spayed thier initial on, as well as my postcode, so if someone is doing rugs for me it makes it easier for them to know which rug goes on which horse.
