One of the horses I turn mine out with is terrible for ripping rugs! My horse usually starts it, as he's very playful, so I don't mind as such, but as my horse gets rainscald I need to make sure he's properly rugged. This is where you come in :D. Can anyone recommend some medium and lightweight turnouts with super-high denier?

I bought him a Shires heavyweight with 2000 denier, and this has so far survived. His 1680D PE rug was not so lucky, though!. Now that warmer weather is on the way I need some lighter rugs, so anyone know of any 2000D med and light weights? I will be eternally grateful!!

Lol at the second comment :D

Not got any ideas really on higher denier rugs, but I had this problem once with another horse, I put cheap lightweights over the top of my more expensive rugs to solve it. These were cheap to replace if they got ripped, could sew them up myself as it didn't matter if they leaked and as they were so light they didn't cause a problem with over heating, despite the extra layer. Also kept my decent rugs cleaner and dryer, so less problem trying to get big heavy rugs dry in winter!

(would like to point out that the OPs horse has also been known to rip rugs - curtosy of pulling like a thug on the back!)

Just so that Wolfy doesnt get a bad rep as an ASBO rug wrecker!

Lol! Hence why I didn't name and shame ;). Fwiw, Junibug was going to get a mention too, though :p. Terrible bloody trio, themlot.

Tennessee - That's a good idea, thanks :)

Joyous - :D I'm after a 6'6", but at least now I know they exist!

Nocturnal - how about one of those cheapy typ mesh style fly rugs couldn't you put that over the sweetich ones?

As for hot rainy days! i bought my boy a waterproof/fly rug last year, cannot for the life of me remember if it was a shires, but the top half was waterproof, then the bottom was fly mesh, only paid £40 for it, although ive just realised it needs a wash

Ooh, I love bucas rugs, thanks Faracat :). It doesn't say the denier on it though, and as you say - an expensive rug to take a chance on. But then, a new outer for my PE trio would cost that much...

It's thicker than the Rambo Duo and is similar or maybe slightly thicker than the Shires Stormcheeta. Mine is the old-style Smartex rain and it's the toughest rug I have (still looks new after a downpoor washes the mud off and I bought it in '06), so if the new-style is as good I would personally take the chance. ;)

Joyous - Now THAT sounds good! Will have a google...

And yeah, a mesh one over the top might work. Esp if I soak it in cribbox first!

Horse will be annoyed if the others refuse to play with him, though! :p

Faracat - Sounds good... I'm very tempted! Might have to try both!

I had this problem and the only rug that stood up to wedgies :), spinnies :), tug of war etc etc was a Rambo :eek:
Broke my heart spending so much on a rug but it lasted years and is still going apart from the fact the playing got that rough my horse got a fractured leg so is seperated from his play mate
