luckily been working in field where my horse is but saw her standing wih her neck unusually arched and on inspection she had got her bottom teeth caught on the lower chest strap of the turnout rug, let me sort her out and apart fron small bleeding of gums is fine, but if i wasn't there or she paniced dread to think what could of happened.

she is fine but rug staying off at moment rather she got wet than hurt, just all of you be careful with rugs never thought this could of happened.

PS I also knew a horse who got her hind legs caught in loose surcingles of her turnout rug. She was standing on 3 and a half legs for god knows how long. I always ensure that J's do not dangle down.

it is a masta rug with two chest straps with buckles rug didn't tear and they where done up quite tight, it is warm and she may of been itching chest or trying to get a fly off but got caught.

I know of a horse who broke a leg when they did that. needless to say they were PTS!!
I cringe when I see the way some people do leg straps up!!

Foxfolly, that's why I don't use leg straps ever any more. X surcingles under belly and fillet string keep all Fal rugs perfectly in place. the risks are just too high otherwise, i've heard of quite a few horses breaking legs that way.

I too rescued a pony in a field in the winter from this very same problem

All these problems show the importance of making sure all straps are fitted correctly. it will not rule out all accidents, but it will help prevent many.

We all think we know how to do a rug correctly but is there a definate right and wrong, how many rugs come with instructions(not that we would read them) to tight uncomfortable when laying down or grazing to loose dangerous.
