How do you guys wash your own rugs??

I dont want to send them away and what fits in the washing machine goes in, but how do you do the bigger ones? Jetwashing/hosing etc doesnt seem to work for me :(

I was thinking soaking in big wheelbarrow washing around a bit then hanging to dry, does this work???

I'm afraid washing in an industrial washing machine is the only method i've found that cleans them properly.
Mine get sent away.
I always ask for mine to be air-dried and not tumble dried - no shrinkage!:D

There are some things that a bit of effort you can save some money....for me rug washing wasn't worth saving the money TBH.
I attempted to wash & reproof all my rugs last spring. Never. Again.

I had a huge plastic tub. I soaked them in soapy water & scrubbed them. I then lifted them out (they were ridiculously heavy & I got totally drenche) hung them over s fence & powerhosed to rinse. I then left them to dry.....they took forever! Even in the good weather because they were so wet & hadn't been spun or wrung there was one rug which took over a week to dry properly!!
To add insult to injury...they didn't even look that bloomin'

I hated every minute of the whole process!

I won't bother with that money saving idea again :-D

Don't risk a bad DIY job with a turnout rug, send it to someone who can wash it and reproof it properly, it is protecting your investment. Like having an expensive suit dry cleaned.

You could try washing a stable rug or under rug yourself in a large container but to be honest I'd rather pay and get a decent job done. Ask around you can probably find a rug cleaning service locally and make arrangements so that they aren't away too long.

Or buy an extra large washing machine......

I 'ditto' cleaning rugs properly at home can be just too difficult.

I suppose a lot depends upon the size of your horse and the capacity of your washing machine, but I have a 6'6 rug wearing horse and a 9kg industrial washing machine (I have x4 sons so need the industrial build!) and only the lightest no-fill standard neck turnout rug will wash decently. I've a 6'6 Rhino Plus Heavy Weight Stable Rug Combo which will fit in to wash - but even after x3 rinse cycles will still come out of the machine with marks on it from the Napisan I've used.

Personally I like to know all my rugs have had a good antibacterial clean at least once a year, which I dont think you can effectively acheive using the hose and brush method. These days I use Lycra rug liners which do fit into my machine and can be washed frequently.

Hmm was afraid it would be a bad idea! Only have a small washing machine at work so does the minature/pony rugs summer sheets/fleeces and lightweights!! Oh will have to send them away then! Anyone reccomend a collection service (I'm in newbury) as there will be about 50 rugs!!
