Rugged or Rugless???

It feels like it hasn't stopped raining here (West coast of Scotland) for bloody weeks!!:mad:

Horse has been naked bar one night when we were issued with a weather warning!! He had a sheet on then and was fine. Not cold here as such but certianly not warm, everyone at the stables has been back in wellies and jackets for a couple of weeks :(:(

Still managing ruggless for now but nearly rugged today. They have started changing their coats though.

Don't care if it's "summer" I would catch pneumonia if I went out in shorts & a t shirt in this.

Temperature is temperature, regardless of , alleged(!), season!

Ours are out at night and in during the day. So rug off daytime, but with a fairy TB, she is rugged at night in lightweight turnout.

Absolutley NOT rugged - it's nearly 20c FFS A normal, healthy horse will probably be revelling in the cooler weather and feel refreshed after a good roll.....or do people not own brushes anymore and therefore need to rug all year round??? Put a coat on and wander around for a while and see how you feel.....

My IDX is in during the day and out at night, naked as the day he was born! He's young (8), healthy, well fed and has numerous trees for cover if he wants and he was designed for living outdoors with no clothes on! Admittedly he will probably be filthy when I go to ride him tomorrow but that's life! It was 16 degrees at 9pm this eveing so he would be far too warm even in a lightweight.

Ours are all unrugged, it's JULY! The 28yr old is standing in the middle of the field in the middle of a thunderstorm, eating! If she doesn't need a rug, I can't see that many do!

Mine has a lightweight on tonight as its raining and he's out all night. He has his flyrug underneath, and usually wears just his flyrug unless its going to rain all night.

my experience of rugging in the summer is not great.... see little point in LW's.....tend to leak anyhow and are only shower proof, not torrential proof.

Tend to leave out with shelter or if feeling soft I bring in......only rug in winter when its cold :)

Am I harsh?

Ha i feel a bit naughty! I rugged my IDXTB, but he is the biggest softie ever, he was shivering his arse off when i went to get him, he was standing next to the very fine thoroughbred in the field, and she wasnt shivering! it had only been raining for 20 mins, of course there is plenty of tree shelter...but no he stands in the middle of the field. Locally the tempeture was 16C but you do lose 40% of your body heat when wet. Problem is i havnt been able to buy a new lightweight (been busy with money and bank issues) so i put his middlewight on :O. Its just for tonight though

weather went from 29 degrees to 13 here in one day so yes they have rugs on...and it is peeheesing it down!I rug liveries horses as i rug my own, unless they request otherwise! :)

hannabanna - If you need a lightweight rug they go some good quality and good priced ones on Equestrian Clearance.

Hadfos - Yeah the temperature has dropped dramatically so i bet the horses feel it to!!

The weather is hurendous here today, chucking it down with rain, very very windy so mine staying rugged all day unless weather changes suddenly!! x

Thanks horse crazy, I think I will be buying one from there at weekend, the horse has a bigger wardrobe than me. Mine still has middleweight on now as it was forcast to pee down now but the blooming suns came out :O, going to go down now to take it off..poor sods probably roasting

Rugless. He's a TB but he's fat and happy. He isnt a fan of rugs so would rather he burnt a few extra calories keeping himself warm than stewing under a sheet.
The other TB on field is naked too. They were happy as larry last night even in all the heavy rain and thunder. They have a huge tree and hedge to shelter under as and when they want to which I think is plenty enough at this time of year.

Slightly underweight 25yo TB has a rainsheet (well, overnight anyway) all the others, bit younger, but fatter out 24/7 rugless :)

Ishmad - Mine normally have a field shelter in their paddock but the field they in atm they aint got any shelter.

Hannabanna - "The horse has got a bigger wardrobe than me" - that doesn't surprise me mine have to lol. Weetherbeeta are a great make of rug. They ones i have got don't leak.

Doris2008 - Yeah i know what you mean, you would rather your horse use his fat than be rugged.

I love how shetlands have their own catagory...lol. Shetlands surely come under the pony catagory:D

Mine are rugless all year round bar my wimpy tb who has a rug on for the worst of the winter unless there is persistent cold rain for days and days.
