Hi

I am just about to buy a pure bred Percheron for my fella. He comes with his rugs (Weatherbeeta) but they are simply not deep enough for him.

I know many manufacturers do rugs up to 7'6" but these are mainly designed for big TBs / WBs and would look like a mini skirt on him.

Does anyone have experience of buying rugs for heavy horses e.g. Shires etc and if so please can you tell me of suitable brands that do extra deep rugs for gentle giants?

I have heard that Lansdown do made to measure but does anyone have any further suggestions?

Many thanks in advance!

P.S. Don't even ask how I'm gonna actually be able to reach to get a rug on the thing?!

Landsdown do made to measure - yes

However, Fal will also customize rugs for you - so it would be worth contacting them. I have a feeling that Horseware do now as well.

i have the exact same problem, a 7'6 weatherbeeta is like a mini skirt on her! i try and keep her rug free but now shes older, she has it on when its very cold/wet as it does help her to some degree! she lives out so often wears a rug of mud!

ETA - the problem with having them made is, you will need a few incase one gets ripped and ned is used to being rugged - hence def going to cost quite a bit i would imagine - it would be fab to hear how you get on!

I've just bought a Weatherbeata for Donkey - who is well endowed in the chest and it is lovely and roomy on her! I also use the Rambo Excel rugs for the wider chest and they are very good!

Welcome to the world of heavy-horse ownership

I have a Vladimir (a Russian heavy draft horse). He is 17.3 and weighs 1 tonne - probably built like your Percheron. The only rugs deep enough are Fal - all the other ones look hilarious as there is large amount of tummy showing

. My other heavy is a Clydesdale x. She is smaller at 17, but is still a large lady - Fal fit her pretty well too. There is no way I could ever get a hood big enough for either of them though - not that they need one.

I am lucky in that our clydie is the old fashioned working type so fits a 7' rug nicely. Only one I have to be careful with is amigos and they are not too generous on the chest width.

Bossy bibs will also make you an extra extra SS size bib if you need it for about an extra £5.

Hi,
I have a Percheron & find even though weatherbeeta do big sizes dont buy them! theyre too shallow & tight round the chest. Derby house go up to 7'6" (which is what size mine is) and they are excelent. Nice and deep round the chest. Usually you can get them in the sales very cheap because nobody wants them that big. I'm sure you've worked out that percherons are alot wider than clydesdales & most shires. People who dont personaly know percherons dont understand this!
I compete mine in dressage & my husband hunts him. I hope yours is as special as ours. Let me know if you need advice on where to source tack, boots ect.

From experienced percheron owner
Premier equine not deep enough round neck. Ends up cutting into bottom of gullet if they try to graze.

Fal & Rambo very expensive & I find I need to leave top chest strap undone to prevent same roblem as above.

Weatherbeeta - dont bother!

Masta go up to 7'3" they fit well if he is a small percheron, I need at least 7'6" though.

Derby House - All my rugs are from here. Perfect.

I'd love to see a photo of a Percheron. Please would you Percheron owners post one? There was a lovely old boy at a farm where I used to live. He only had one eye and he was the gentlest horse I've ever met.
