…. controversial I know. Never normally rug ponies at all (except for my cushiness oldie), but we are riding the kids shetland every day, she is grey and with all this weather, she is fiiiiilthy!
Just thinking that while the mud is so bad, I might try ruggng her in a no-fill waterproof sheet, which I will take off when the ground is harder or we move her to a different field.
Stabling not an option at the moment.
Any advice on brands, type?

I rug mine and he's not ridden. Also grey (pure white) he gets scabby permanently wet and muddy so I use that as an excuse!
One thing I would say re- brands is go for a "pony rug" rather than a rug that just has tiny sizes as the cut is often wrong.

I'd never rug a hairy, even without any fill, you run the risk of them overheating/getting sweat scald. One of my hairies was getting too warm naked so I fully clipped (only after I found a bib and blanket weren't enough) and now rug accordingly - could this be an option?

Ruggles do brill Shetland rugs, they are specifically for Shetlands as some small rugs just don't suit. My Shetland has a no fill sheet on if raining as she gets rain scald. In the at stable she's a naked fluff ball :)

used to rug ours to keep him clean for ridden work.i think he was colder in a no-fill than if he had no rug at all because it flattens the natural coat.also because his fur kept his body heat in so well the rug stay wet for longer.

Sorr to hi-jack thread so just a quick question. Any one have small donkeys? Need rug for rain but most small rugs don't fit round rhe neck.

It depends on the size of the Shetland. Most of mine are big, up to height chunks and I find that Amigo and Derby House rugs fit them great. But I suspect the necks may be too big on the smaller ponies.

For donkeys look towards the foal rugs as they are made for narrower beasties.

100% Ruggles! I don't bother with any other brands any more as I found ruggles rugs are perfect for wee ones, very good quality, durable and perfect fit, as the chest has both clip fastenings and strap to adjust it you can get them to fit any shaped wee one. I have a small herd and they all are rugged up in no fills when the weather gets particularly wet or extremely muddy and their rugs come off daily of a night time and I've yet to find them hot in no fills and none of mine are clipped.

I've had all sorts of foal rugs made by major brands, dinky rugs etc and they just don't match up to Ruggles.
