Do many HHOs not use neck covers on horses with trace clips unless it is really cold (around freezing) or turned out in the rain? I try not to use neck covers but all the clipped horses where I keep mine including those with trace clips are rugged with neck covers and it is 12 degrees odd at night. I am confident (I think!) in my not neck covers but just wondered what the norm is these days as makes me start feeling mean.

My Arab that is full clipped with legs and half a face on doesn't have a neck on unless it's hammering it down and cold.

His been having a sheet on in day its been 14 degrees and at night 50g or 100g depending how cold and they are out most of the time.

So no I wouldn't use a neck in 12 degrees.

Neck covers are a relatively recent innovation. Whilst I have a number of detachable neck covers I very rarely use them.

Currently I have three horses which are either blanket/chaser clipped and currently none are in rugs. They are out during the day and in at night. It is only dropping to about 8o at night here and they are plenty warm enough.

I try not to use neck covers whenever possible! I just think in mildish weather the horse can regulate their temperature easier without

My girl is trace clipped and I only use a neck cover if it’s raining (she hates getting wet) or minus temperatures all day (she’s not keen on cold weather). She never wears a neck cover in the stable no matter how cold it is.
