Rugging in stable

Are people putting rugs on there stabled horses still? I'm new to making these choices :confused: and heard someone say that at an expected 6degrees at night it was too warm to rug a horse but when I looked in the other stables all the other horses were rugged? So I threw on her light weight stable rug and thought I'd query peoples opinions on here.

She's a 16 year old sports horse who I now feel is at a good weight (don't know if that makes a difference).
 
Our hunters are still having rugs at night, medium weight or light weight. They'll be turned away after this weekend so they'll go out at night with medium weight NZs on and naked during the day as long as the weather is good.
 
Mines fully clipped Dec she's got a thin fleece on overnight TBH bar the worst of the weather she's had that on most of winter and been ok (stables American Barm style) she's a true diva so expected her to be rugged right up!! Sheonly has to see rainand starts shivering!!! Anyhow she doesn't really need anything now but she's a messy cow unrugged :confused: I'm considering turning her out 24/7 or switching to in during day out overnight !! :D
 
There is no right or wrong, all horses are different :rolleyes:

In the winter, Lyla was rugged during day (rainsheet as she was a porker :o) and naked at night. She looks much better for it (apart from the beard!!!:eek:)

Now, she naked during the day but has a summer sheet on at night as she likes to lie in her pooh (and I'm too lazy/dont have time to brush it off in the morning :eek::eek::eek:) and I want her to have some naked days out before the flies get too bad and she has to go into fly sheet :eek:

Is your horse clipped? Do they feel the cold? 16 not old, and if there are weight concerns prob best to leave them cooler .... But you know your horse ... I know it's difficult, but go with what you feel best for your horse, not what others are doing with theirs ... Everyone will have an opinion that doesn't match yours :rolleyes:;)

Some ((porky)) horses where I am are still in 3rugs ....
 
My ISH had medium on but he's dropped off over winter and i cannot afford for him to get cold and loose anymore.
 
Our lot are still rugged, mostly medium weights or light weights. Mine is out naked, full coat and out of work (lame but field sound). Nasty mummy, hope he drops some weight! :o
 
In the sun she is out naked in the day or with a light weight rug on if it is a little cooler. Indoors I have been a little bit less sure.

So if 6 degrees is a little cool for a horse to be rug-less when stabled at roughly what temp would you start leaving a horse naked in the stable?? She may be out 24/7 come May.
 
Mine has lightweight nz when out and a fleece if in overnight. He would probably be fine naked all the time but I'm going soft in my old age!
 
Naked during the day, thin fleece overnight, fully clipped but she is a 'hot' horse. Even when it's -temps she rarely gets into a heavyweight.
 
Spider is in his heavyweight at night at the moment (well, it claims to be heavy but at 300g I am not convinced) and is going out to play in a lightweight. When he is in during the day he is in a fleece. I worry about over rugging but he is a fully clipped tb and has dropped some weight with the stress of moving and seems comfortable this way. Horses for courses ;)
 
My two girls were both last fully clipped in feb. my ginger one has a M/W in at night and a fly rug or nothing on during the day - while the weathers been good. If its peeing it down she'll have a LW on at least.

Pony is fat - so has had clothes removed for several weeks now - she has a rain sheet on if it's piddling it down as she's pathetic lol

Just depends on horse really - some can cope with being nekkid and some need some clothing on :)
 
Mine, all fairly fit, clipped but now with summer coats, were all left out rugless last night.
All are still alive, non e-mailed me complaining and at 6 a.m. they were either lying down or grazing.
 
Mine's fluffy and throwing his coat, naked stabled during the day and I was throwing a fleece on him overnight in the stable but he's come up in little bumps on his clipped patches and someone suggested he might be a little too hot so he's been naked for the past week or so.
 
Unclipped sport horse, very warm/sheltered stable with deep straw bed . . . summer sheet last night.

That said, it depends on your horse.
