Is it necessary to rug an unclipped native in the stable? Mine is rugged for TO but not at night as i didnt think he'd need it. But my friend says he should be rugged at night with a mw rug! Opinions please!!
If the horse is rugged throughout the day then yes he should be rugged when he is in a stable. It is cold in a stable and because he can't move around to keep warm he will become quite cold, quite quickly.
It depends totally on the weight of the rug you are using through the day as to how warm the evening rug needs to be. Don't forget temperatures dip overnight plus horsey can't move around, so generally I use either the same or greater weight for night time stabled horses.
what rug has yours got on in the field, my native (welsh D) would have just a rain sheet or rug of no more than 200g at the moment just to stop him getting dirty, he would only have a waffle rug in the stable if he was damp
agree with tia. they get colder in the stable than they do out and about moving around - remember all a stable does is shelter them from wind and rain - the temperature is still the same. My Welsh D is just wearing a LW in the field at the moment to keep the mud off him and keep him dry when it rains, but he is in a MW(6oz) in the stable at night and he is unclipped.
My conne has previously always been rugged since September, then clipped in October. But this year, as he's been lame I haven't rugged, I tried on tuesday, because I thought it was freezing, but he just sweated up. If he is a mega fluffball like mine I wouldnt bother. But maybe you should if you want to keep his coat down?
just to keep him dry!
I don't think he needs rugging at all, but then surely he'd need something in the stable if he can't move about to keep warm? Then vice versa if he's wearing something in the stable he'll def. need to keep his TO on in the day...
I relise that in the stable there not moving about as much and temp drops but its still soooo much warmer then out side.. im guessing he has a nice deap bed, if hes unstod its like have four redaitors!!
With natives i agree with a light wieght just to stop him getting soaked, caked in mud and shield the wind none of this are a problem in the stable.
I would personaly wait till it's really get cold for a medium weight, its only just turned november think what its going to be like in jan!!
snap! my welshie is wearing the same, when she is out and roaming around in the day she has her lightweight just to keep the rain and mud off really, but she has a mw at night when stabled, if it wasn't for me showing her she wouldn't be rugged at all!!

Lol, I have no choice but to keep him in! So rugged it will have to be.
My connie is a fluffy teddy bear, and is out at day unrugged and in at night unrugged. He doesn't seem to have a problem, is as round as a tub and has tons of hay so I won't be rugging him unless it snows, when he might get a 'fleece' on.
He doesn't need it and gets grumpy if rugged too much!
My Welsh D feels the cold and gets extremely grumpy if not warm enough and always has done. He is unclipped and in a MW out during the day and a WB Jasper lite rug at night in his stable. He is happy with this arrangement all winter...but have a HW just in case.
They are all different and it is not always right to assume a native does not need rugging. I get flack for it where I am but he becomes down right un-manageable if left cold in winter.
my Welsh D can be a bit of a wuss too. I have tried being hard with him, but even when left to grow his wooly mammoth coat he still gets tucked up when he's cold and will shiver when it rains. Would rather rug him and him be happy, even if some people think I'm being soft!
I wouldnt put on a MW (maybe when it was super duper cold) for an unclipped native. Although depends how fuzzy he gets! One of mine is so fluffy that he'd sweat in a MW. But then he isnt rugged outside, only when weather is really bad (and just coz he's older and I feel better to rug him!).
if you didn't put a MW on mine he'd certainly be cold. Just coz it's an unclipped native doesn't mean it doesn't need rugging. He is nearly 21, but he's always liked being rugged and stands there shivering if you dont. Never found him sweating that's for sure!
What are these animals, horses or humans!
We have a welshie who only has a rug chucked on in the worst of winter snow and is far happier that way , he has a nice thick winter coat that was designed for surviving the cold British climate.
Sorry not into molly-coddling!

no need to be so rude!
if you didn't rug my horse you'd be pretty cruel - he stands there tucked up and shivering and looking downright miserable without a rug - you just cannot say you wont rug a horse because it's a native - some of them just dont cope. i dont like rugging unless necessary - if he could cope, i wouldn't bother, but it's not healthy for a 20yr old veteran to be so tucked up he looks like an elephant on a tub.
