So is it better to go lightweight then medium then heavy ?

or

Lightweight then lightweight & fleece then heavy?

layers or 3 rugs to swap between, or am I being taken in by purveyors of fine rugs?

If your horses are out 24/7 then I wouldn't advise using a fleece.

Just go for the weight of rug most appropriate for the weather conditions.

I have the Rambo Optimo - start off with just the rain sheet if its wet + cold - if its one or the other just doesnt need either.

If cold with just the sheet I had the 100 gram liner - last year that was all she needed.

If cold with that I swap for the 200 gram liner.

I do not use the neck attachment, pointless things.

If the sun is out the rugs are off - the sun is like a microwave if theyre rugged and eating.

I have one out 24/7 whi is rugged. We started with a rainsheet and then onto a 100g fill. I left him in that for as long as possible as the weather was so up and down and now he is in a full neck 200g and I doubt I will go any heavier.

I wouldn't layer a horse who is out 24/7 - they need to be able to move freely with no chaffing.

As above I prefer only one rug, you can get really warm rugs & attach liners, so my horses are out in the coldest weather, clipped yet still only have one rug on.
I like premiere equine rugs, they do liners which fit fine in other makes as well.
So I wouldn't use the fleece.
Just feel the base of their ears or inside their arm pits & make a decision based on how the horse feels.

So are Rambo better that Weatherbeeta? I need a new rug for my daughters new horse/pony - she's 19, fit as a fiddle and a pom pom but don't want to buy 2 if 1 will do !

Thanks for all the nifty advice by the way...

Ditto!

Rambo are awesome. I wouldn't buy anything else these days.

I didn't get on with my rambo at all, I found the zip on the neck really, really stiff & the neck was a very odd shape, I tried it on 3 horses, who all have quite slim necks yet it was far too small for them & rubbed them.

It's now being used as a dog bed.

Rugs with liners are probably the best option now rather than buying loads individually and probably spending more!

You get what you pay for with rugs, i've got a premier equine rug with the liners and love it and also got a rhino rug which is really good too! But it can depend on the shape of your horse as to which make is best!

Premier Equine Trio for mine :)
100g outer - fine for aumtumn days, then a choice of liners to add as & when required (I have 2 - a 100g & a 200g liner so max total is 300g including the outer). There is also a well fitting seperate hood which doesn't move off at all & this can go on for those wet days, tho I dont bother for cold ones as DF is fine without.

Having used Rambo & also PE, I'm just as happy with the PE rug - with a 1680 outer, its good value for money :)

I do also have their storm buster with integral neck for those really really cold wet days when I throw them out while I'm at work, so they are out 11/12 hours, but haven't used it yet this winter :)

Hmmm. I own umpteen rambos and not a single one has a zip on the neck. :o

That's odd, I got it at Blenheim about 5 or 6 years ago, maybe it's a fake, it's a warm & well made rug, just a really odd shape.
I was reduced but I still paid quite a lot for it.

I prefer just one rug for turnout (thinkness obviously weather dependent). If I really do need to layer, I would use two turnouts rather than a fleece or stable underneath as they always seem to stick out or hang down lower then get wet when they lay down!

A few years back they did release a batch with zipped necks - major fail, they were rubbish. Rambo replaced the neck for free with the velco straps.

That's interesting to hear, I wonder if they're still offering to do that? It's a same as it's a nice rug but the neck is rubbish.

I've just emailed them in the hope of getting the neck replaced, thanks for the information, maybe I'll get a usable rug out of it.
