Native pony, will have an Irish clip over winter.
Rugged in a high denier 0 fill, unless it gets quite cold, then high denier 100g rug.

We're currently getting rather wet on our hacks. It doesn't matter as she isn't clipped yet, so is out without a rug, but thinking ahead, I don't want to be putting on a rug when she's returning wet from hacking.
I have looked for a cotton lined rug, as I thought this would wick moisture, but can't find such a thing. So considering using a very thin summer sheet underneath her usual rug.

Would this work? Am I creating a problem where one doesn't really exist?

As long as it’s not night time she should dry under a breathable turnout just fine.
I threw one on my absolutely soaked gelding as I didn’t get to the field before the rain started and he was warmer after about 10 minutes and fully dry in about 2 hours

That's helpful, thank you.

I have just bought a Bucas Smartex rug / rain sheet for one of my old ponies, they aren’t the cheapest rugs but it’s working well. The tog rating is low but it has a wicking lining which is marketed as being suitable to dry off a wet/hot horse and prevent chilling so although similiar to a no fill rug it comes in at around 50g. Worth having a google to see if there are any for sale. Mine is a ‘big’ neck suitable for chunky ponies!

I second this recommendation - best thing ever when I had one for my previous gelding. I could bring him back from quite hard work and really quite sweaty and the Bucas Smartex worked like a dream, always popped straight on him and out he would go. Foolishly I sold it when he went to the big field in the sky as I thought I would never have such a big horse again and wouldn't need a 7'. Bad move, within 5 years I did need another 7' for a new horse by which time I could not justify the cost. Well worth it though if you can spare the money.

I use an exercise sheet for hacking which seems to keep them dry enough to just put the rug on top.

If he's got sweaty (or it's v.wet and cold) I use a lightweight cooler under the T/O rug.

I already had the cooler otherwise I'd have bought the Bucas Smartex, I think.

Thank you, yes, I shall see how the Smartex is once it arrives. It does sound useful.

I've started switching out all my 0g fills for 50g (100 for the old ones) because you get less of a clammy effect. 0g fills can also sometimes make them colder because it flattens down the hair so I only use them in summer rainstorms for the older sensitive ones. Otherwise I only rug after they've had at least half their coat clipped off so they don't usually come back sweaty, and if they are soaking wet and cant get dry, I bung a cooler under the turnout and go and whip it off later.
