Hi, was just wondering what is the best thing to do this time of year re rugging?
I cant take his SI rug off as there is still bugs about and he is still itchy!! But i am worried that he will get cold and wet if it rains now the temperature has started to drop.
So do you just chuck a lightweight turnout over the top to keep them dry, only thing is i dont want him getting too hot either, have only had him 4 months and previous said he can get quite hot in rugs, OR would a lightweight turnout with neck cover offer enough protection from the bugs and midges on its own???
I have never had a SI horse before so its still a huge learning curve.

Thanks in advance for any replies :)

I invested in a rambo sweetitch hoddy and a waterproof liner this year. It's been fab and well worth the money. :)

If I had a normal flyrug I would probably put a turnout on undernieth the rug if it was going to rain. Some horses I look after had trunouts ontop (By there owner) during all the rain we had at the begining of summer and the flyrugs got soaked under the turnout as the flyrug just absorbed the rain. :( When I got there they were freezing cold :( I dried it all out and put the turnout on First and they stayed much dryer and walmer :)

Hope that makes sence and is of help to you. I'm new to SI to :(

Mine wears a rambo sweet itch hoody which Ive found to be as waterproof as most rain sheets so Ive never bothered to but the rain liner. If its gets really wet Ill chuck a rain sheet over the top. x

When it's too wet for the sweet itch hoody, I've used an amigo 1200 lite, with a neck 2 sizes bigger than is normal for her size. The neck goes right up to her ears and the rug actually gives great coverage on her belly - better than some fly rugs! I just use Neem oil on the face, legs and udders, every few days.

My boy has a snuggy hoods sweet itch suit which is very closely fitted, a turnout rug can go on over it no problems

If you don't want to rug over it then look at the material that the rugs are made from, the snuggy hood is thich but doesn't seem to hold the water. I have a Masta SI rug too and am very impressed with that, the material is very lightweight and I think it's a really good 'budget' option. I also have the Rambo Hoodie and like it but I would say it's not the best of the three, the material is heavy and holds the dirt and rain more
