Zak was clipped about 6 weeks ago, and his coat has already grown back!Should i be rugging him up more?He is in a rambo 400gm when out in day and a 350gm stable rug-both with neck. He is also still skinny so should i put more rugs underneath-and if so which ones that wont get wet?!

It doesn't suprise me that Zak's coat has grown back in the last 6 weeks. I have clipped T twice in that time. I think it is probably more to do with the fact that their coats a generally just still growing at this time of year rather than the horse being cold. As to rugging up more - when you change his rugs in the morning does he feel warm under them - are the bases of his ears warm. If he feels warm enough I wouldn't worry about adding more. Personally I find my horses are more comfortable slightly cool than roasting hot. 350g and 400g sound plenty warm enough for this time of year - it really is quite mild at the moment (does depend where you are mind). When it drops well below freezing I tend to put a thin 100g quilted stable rug (or a fleece that fits well) under my turnouts. In the stable I tend to find that it is more comfortable for him if I add a rug ontop of his full neck rug - seems less likely to rub. hope thats helpful.

my mare got clipped at least 6 weeks ago too! and she is nearlly fluffy as a chinchilla again! she also has a 380g full neck on, and if loosing weight, but is still out 24/7 and is on little feed. all has to change this weekend

she will start to come in through winter, her feed will get bulked up, and she will end up having 2 heavy weights and a medium weight on :O

Fly's coat is minimal as he is well rugged all the time. He hates being clipped so by rugging well BEFORE the winter coat starts growing and continuing to do so he doesn't grow one. Much better for him, and he looks beautiful!
