Rugging

Sorry peeps was at the yard, no he his isn't clipped, so will be taking your advice, and take some layers off!, he is in good weight not fat or thin just right for this time of year, i've turned him away for the winter so thought with him not doing much he may need it, but i think i may have tried to humanise him a bit, (slap on the wrist!) what do you all think? he is stabled at night, but i don't like to change rugs when they go in as i don't like to put cold rugs on at these temperatures. Should i leave the fleece on and his medium weight combo on? x

If he's not in work then I wouldn't be putting any rugs on him except in the very coldest weather if he really really needed it, and then it would only be one MW . I would suggest feeding him adlib hay and as someone else wrote above, that will heat him from the inside out. I did it myself last winter with my forest run filly who had to come in because she had got poor and it really does work.

Stick a fork in him, he's done!

My native 14hh is naked, think it's been down to about -10 here & we've got 3 inches of snow!

My WB is in a MW Amigo with a wool day rug under it & he lives out & my ISH is in a LW stable rug with a no fill TO over it.

What you need to do is feel your horse and see how warm he is. Best place is to feel between the back legs on the skin, you can feel how warm he is. This is what I do and helps me to decide what rugs to put on. My cob has a low trace clip, lives out 24/7, isn't fat and has a MW on at night and LW during the day(no fill), purely as there is little shelter, and is still warm.
