Hi there...My boy is truly a hippo! Every night rolls until his ears, eye sockets and mane (and he has a turnout neck on his rug) are covered in mud (clumps of it!). So I want to buy a turnout hood that I can use night before shows as it makes getting ready so tricky for early starts. He also has 4 white socks so hours of cleaning before we cna even leave the yard. Nightmare with this muddy wet winter!

Looked at both Ruggles and Snuggy Hoods. Massive price difference.

I appreciate Snuggy ones are probably better quality material but he also trashes his neck covers on fencing so worried about spending £70 for him to tear and rip it on first wear!

Any views / recommendations? Thx :-)

Any chance he might be getting a bit too hot under his rugs? The weather has been atrocious, but really quite mild. I have been having to take the girls rugs off when the sun has decided to come out as they get really uncomfortable.

Great idea about the Nikwax! :-)

He's only in a Medium even when it got down to minus and he's blanket clipped. So don't think he's too hot as he rolls even on freezing cold days! Also dropped him down to a 70g when it got mild/wet/warmer. He has always been a mud lover! Yuck!

I should add...I have a full size snuggy turnout hood, the pull on type. I stopped using it in the end as I kept finding little nicks on Fly's face around her eyes. It didn't take long to see her rubbing her face against anything she could find. I figured I would rather her grow a bit of hair and just brush off the mud than have her covered in scars. I can say the snuggy hoods are very very durable to the point she could break her skin through them and yet leave nothing but a little fuzz on the snuggy hood that rubbed off and left it looking new.

I love my snuggy headless hood. My boy tends to get really hot and rip rugs etc but he is fine in this. Doesn't have a head so still gets plastered but I am paranoid about him wearing a head!

Can't comment on ruggles, but my irish bog pony has a snuggy headless one to go under a 100g TO. He rolls a lot and loves to coat under his neck, mane and ears in slick mud. The hood is really good (not destroyed yet and this is it's 2nd winter - most of my rugs don't manage that!).

I have a ruggles hood but didn't get as far as turning out in it, I put in on Theo and left him with the rest of the gang in the yard and it took all of 5mins for the joker in the pack to grab it by the poll and pull it over down over Theo's eyes. I now have the snuggy headless hoods which I've been using on the whole clan for two years now and not had an issue with them. I show and have no stables to keep them in after bath time so they have easily been worth the money

I have a few turnout hoods for me boy. The aren't waterproof but they are heavy showerproof - that said mmy boy's been out in torrential rain and he was fairly dry underneath. I have never bought a full priced hoody as they have stock clearances fairly regularly and there's always good old eBay! *

Does his face and ears still not get coated in mud???

Oh thats a bit naughty then, prob the description of them says waterproof!

This is the one I have:

"The Snuggy Hoods Turn Out Hood is the ultimate time-saver for the busy rider when bringing wet, muddy horses in from the field. It gives back hours spent grooming so that you have more time to ride and enjoy your horse or pony. It can also be used in the stable to prevent stable stains and to protect plaits before a show being the most versatile hood in the Snuggy Hoods Collection.
Constructed of a robust yet breathable, shower proof, fully washable stretch fabric and lined with a silky "shoulder and mane saver©" to prevent these areas from being rubbed or chaffed. It is designed for use all year round"

To be honest I have never bothered as really I only use mine when it snows or is really foul weather and it dries very quickly.

Its not something that would put me off and I believe they are worth the price.

The only comment I would have is that I did make the eye holes bigger as I was not comfortable with the clearance on it.

They would have altered it if I had sent it back, but to be honest I cut the material then zig zag stitched on the machine round the hole to stop it fraying and its been 100%

If you don't get the fit spot on there is always a risk the head part will slip especially if the pony rubs.

I have both the standard Snuggy turnout hood and the headless one and the headless one is probably the most useful one for a fence scraper

If you wash them with plenty of fabric softener this helps the water repellency. I don't nikwax mine and have never ended up with a soaked through hood

I do think they are worth the money. They can be torn yes but they are pretty tough

If the hood gets really ripped Snuggy Hood will refurb it for £25 I believe, I am about to send off mine which had been worn for a good 12 months 24/7 by a compulsive itcher and is only looking a bit ropey now
