I find this time of year very tricky re rugs! What are you all doing??

Welsh D pony not yet clipped and starting to get hairy…currently out 24/7 and it’s down to 3C at night. Currently in a 50g day and night..she feels warm when I get to her in the mornings at 8.30 ish but I do stress about her being cold overnight! I think 100 is probably too much?! She’s not fat but definitely not underweight.

She’s being clipped next week and will be stabled at night…so I’ll stick her 100g on and after a clip I almost feel it’s easier somehow! 200g is my comfort spot for most of winter 😂

Tell me what you are all doing for yours??

Blanket clipped, in at night. Has a no fill on during day, nothing when in stable, as very warm in there.

Will have to drop temperature before she gets a 100g on.

Most she wears is a 200g, and dislikes neck covered. So only used if baltic/ torrential train.
 
Wimpy TB in hard work that had a strenuous event at the weekend, in a 100g overnight to coddle him.

You’ve clipped a youngster, not doing any sweaty work, and it has no clothing when overnight temperatures are 3C?
Why do you think shetlands grow coats at all, if not that they need them?
 
Both in at night and out during day

ID fully clipped and out naked daytime, stable sheet or l/w at night

Shetland has bib clip and naked 24/7

They wouldn’t usually come in at night until early November, but grass has come through all of a sudden and trying to keep them off it!
 
Shetland naked. Her full clip from the summer growing out nicely.
Since Sunday biggest one in 100gr at night and t'other in 50gr at night. Naked during day. Neither had winter clip yet but live out and clipped all year as in competitive work.
 
My fully clipped old boy out 24/7 is out in a 100g overnight & in his Aussie alround rug in the day
My other one is unclipped and out naked 24/7 unless it rains then I’ll stick his 50g on
 
I am such a mean horse mum it seems! Hairy cob, blanket clipped and naked. Out 24/7 at present and more than fine. She has good shelter, lots of grass and plenty of space to move around if cold. She is a hot pony and it’s only dropping to lows of 9 here and I got sunburn in the day yesterday! So she is enjoying the last bit of warmth on her skin.

She’ll get a lightweight rug when the rain starts this weekend.

Horses cope very well in cold and dry weather. I can’t imagine rugging a unclipped native yet.
 
All out 24/7, all still naked unless it’s pouring down, in which case the lightweights come out.

Vaguely debating putting a rug on the retired TB over night, as it’s getting pretty chilly and she’s a wuss.
 
Retired coblet, pleasantly plump, out 24/7 on a field with lots of standing hay currently naked unless forecast is very wet then I pop his rainsheet on.
 
My two TB's are in 50g full necks out over night and stable sheets stood in durning the day. Tiny old pony is in a little bit warmer, she really feels the cold. Zig is back to nothing as its dry and less windy. My little welshx type is naked but he will be all winter.
 
unclipped TB and unclipped welsh B but neither grow any winter coat whatsoever....

have been in 100g in day and cordura thermatex at night but the TB was deffo cold this morning so he has gone out in a 200g and will be in 200g stable rug tonight.

welsh boy still in 100g but will also upgrade to a 200g tonight as he was borderline this morning.

they ARE both weather wimps!
 
All my 3 are out 24/7, unclipped, and medically/behaviourally retired. Arab x Appy, TB x ISH, WB x Sec D. I did feel mean when it was absolutely pouring it down and windy, but they have a shelter they refuse to use unless it's sunny and hot, plenty of hedgerow/copses, and access to plenty of forage. Last time they were rugged with no fills in stormy weather, they spent that much time with their bums to the wind they ended up soaked under the rugs anyway!
 
Lari is out overnight but when he went out it was 16c and I put him in a 50g that had been dropped off washed and reproof minutes before.

I was worried he'd be too hot as then he starts tearing with his teeth but he was fine.
 
Unclipped ISH 100g whilst it’s been down to 3 degrees overnight and either naked or LW rug in day depending on temp/rain. Currently living out 24/7.
 
It’s currently driving me nuts as he hates being cold but I really feel that he’s better off being out of his 50g plus rugs a while longer. He’s been in a no fill turn out overnight and then naked from lunchtime. However this morning I asked that he has his turnout off from 8am as it’s nice and sunny. Just been out very quickly and it’s proper chilly out there. People are either in shorts and a jumper/ looking cold or full winter jumpers!! So no hope for guessing what horse wants to wear. He’s a 15yo ISH who’s front end is mainly TB and back end/ top of bum is the Irish draught hair… 🤷🏻‍♀️😁
 
Unclipped 20 year old Appaloosa cross (Baggs) in light work - he is currently out at night and is naked so that he can get a good roll in and help shift his summer coat in prep for winter coat coming through. If it is supposed to rain I have been popping his 50g no neck rain sheet on him, but will look at him being in his 100g by the end of October as he will turn around and then be out by day. He is a right weather wuss and categorically refuses to leave his stable if it's raining 🤣

Unclipped 2.5 year old full Appaloosa (Rabbit) in no work - Same as Baggs except that he's an even bigger weather wuss and will sulk for days if he gets wet 🤣

Baggs tends to need a 400g if we get to the stage where we have temps below zero as he feels the cold and can drop weight really fast, so with him being an older boy, I'd rather him be ever so slightly over rugged. He doesn't mind and he has coped with this for the last nearly 11 years that I've owned him x

Rabbit runs surprisingly hot, so I won't bother getting Rabbit anything heavier than a 200g as I don't want him overheating - he is still a growing horse too so if he drops a little, I'm not too worried as I'd rather him slightly slim coming out of winter in prep for the spring grass etc x
 
Horses out during the day and in at night currently none are clipped but as soon as my blades are back from sharpening I will start clipping those in work. The two oldest (21 and 24) who do not hold their weight as well as they used to are naked during the day as we have a fair amount of sun and in a fleece at night which I put on at around 10:00 pm when I do late night checks/haying. The others 3 x 20 and 1 12 year old are not currently rugged. It is only dropping down to around 4o for an hour or so at the moment here.

Yes, I'm afraid our two native types just get left to sort themselves out coat-wise. Neither is clipped.

The fur-bereft spotty mare offers me more than enough rug-mithering opportunity all on her own.
 
All of ours had full neck winter rugs on for a couple of nights and a day as it was strong winds and horrible showers. They are out 24/7 still and hoping to manage another month yet before they are in at night.

Our weather is so changeable that it is a day by day scenario here. They are naked today but haffie will be in a 50g tonight and big one probably her 100g.
No field shelter and dependant on wind direction for what like shelter is.
 
Fully clipped native

Last night he was in a 50g with a neck cover and summerweight Thermatex underneath. Mainly as I couldn't find my 100g liner, as I forgot I took it home to wash it. Will probably put it on tonight.

He's in a fleece with a 0g stable rug during the day.

For the rugging vs not rugging natives 'because they are natives'. Although plenty are completely fine unrugged (and no judgement here from me) from t'other side, it's not always that straight forward. Mine has suspected mild PSSM (found in his breed) and is so much happier being kept warm than with cold muscles. Even if he wasn't symptomatic or clipped, I'd struggle to have time to groom properly where the tack goes when riding first thing with limited time before work and they've been out overnight, so a 0g would help that.
 
Just whatever you do take the rug off and check underneath everyday. Rug might be rubbing, horse losing weight or water seeping through.
 
One of mine never wears a rug. This is for two reasons. The first is that he is very hairy and small, the second is that he is very destructive and after what he did to the fly sheet I put him in I'm not spending any more money on clothes for him to trash.
The other one is older, and has a variety of rugs. He's just started having a rug on at night as it's suddenly got really cold when the sun goes down, but he's too hot if I leave him in that all day so he's got no rug on right now. I am not sure of the weight of the fill (it's either 50 or 100g) as his rugs are all ancient and I can't read the labels any more. He does have thicker ones for when we get snow.
