Rugs for an irish clip?

Little cob x trotter has finally made it to the dizzy heights of a low irish clip, that will probably become a higher one once I can convince her this is a plan. We have made it to a little sweaty but not dripping all over now after a 1-1.5 hour hack of mostly trot!

Rugs though…her ears are warm but nose is cold. Haven’t added anything yet to her rainsheet. Rest of her coat is super thick. I cannot think I would ever need a HW for her unless we clipped it all off. Will she sweat in a MW though?

Current plan was:
- fleece under lightweight if she’s a bit cold in milder weather.
- MW if freezing.

Sound right?

Sounds about right - do what you think, put a hand in her armpit, if cold more rug, if hot less rug
Problem with the colelctive hive mind is that all horses run at different temps, Dex ran super hot, but randomly is now running pretty cold compred to the others after his Irish clip.. The horse that had three rugs on when Dex was in a fleece now has 100g less than him overnight.. Same stable location, same forage, no signs of illness or under the weather-ness, drinking fine etc. Just one of those things

As ASBMO says, they're all different really.

I have a Fell pony with the same clip and he's been out in all weather's without any rug. He runs very hot though.

I tend to check armpits and under the mane, he's always warm as toast.

I know but…the days when I had a wardrobe of rugs fled years ago. I’ve only needed LW and fly rugs for the last 5 or so years. So need to buy something 🤦‍♀️! Was hoping the answers might inspire me in my rough stab in the dark on eBay.

My TB has an Irish from the wither, bare neck, half face. We live in a cold place (-4) tonight. She has a 200g on, without the neck, stabled overnight. She is cosy and keeping condition. She *might* get a liner on underneath when we get down to minus figures during the day/double minus figures, depending how she feels.

My Connemara has an Irish clip and lives out 24/7, he is currently in a 100g with no neck most of the time ( he’s grey so seriously considering putting a neck on though!!). When temperature drops to freezing he has a 200g.

I’m no help… just fully re-clipped mine and he’s in a rain sheet (and I’ve never rugged him when he’s had anything less than the full lot off). Fat native that runs hot anyway. Yet in similar weather the Welsh D I used to own would have been in 100-200g of rugs with a trace clip (all he’d allow!) as he really felt the cold and wet, grew a pretty crap winter coat & would use any excuse to drop weight!

Would say a 50g or 100g would probably be a sensible next step up if needed

Ours has an Irish clip.

I was so undecided on rugging, I purchased stable and turnout rugs in every tog available, with detachable necks, from 0g to 300g.

I still haven't broken into the 300g.

Utterly ridiculous, I know, and no help to you at all. Sorry. 😂

Similar to my TB but he’s just half neck. He’d probably have 250g for that but not a great deal more.

FYI fleeces under rugs tend to slip back and cause pressure points/pain. You would be better with a liner compatible 0g then you can add a 100g liner (or 50g) and if he gets even colder then a 200g liner (may not need it).

I much prefer liners as they clip in and no slippage etc plus you can wash them really easily!

I’ve literally never had this issue. My TB used to wear fleece, duvet, heavyweight with full neck all winter long (living out) and no problem ensued. Last winter we had a borrowed fleece on one of my son’s plus an emergency warmer rug because she decided to drop weight in February and get cold. Again, no issue. Thankfully she has a thicker coat this year!

Still looking at rugs and not pressed the button to buy anything 🤦‍♀️🤣. Will look at ones where you can clip in liners - any good makes that don’t cost the Earth?

I’m looking at Marketplace too but there’s everything except the size I need locally! Did see the cutest Thelwell stable rug and wonder if it would fit on any of my kids’ ponies though…

I like Swish rugs a lot, the liners are compatible so I use horsewear liners and premier equine liners and they also fit shires liners...so I get all mine second hand!

The shires rugs are also really good and not expensive and again you can use swish, horeswear, premier equine and shires liners on them.
