I am a big fan of weatherbeeta rugs... however, my latest purchase of a lighweight landa original has proven a bit of a disapointment...

It is a size larger than he probably needs at present as he is still growing and I don't want him growing out of it before he's worn it but the fit around the neck is awful. The front rides up and garotts him!! it looks like a miniskirt... I can't understand it as his mediumweight of the same style but a size smaller is very generous around the neck?!

Any recomendations for rugs that are reasonably generous around the neck / shoulder? he's not huge width ways (yet) but has a deep neck and chest. help!

here he is so you get an idea... sorry, I don't have one with his head up.

My IDx (chunkier than yours I would say, looking at your pic) gets on best with Fal-Pro and JHL. I don't like Weatherbeeta rugs at all and found Amigo fit very oddly on his chest/shoulders.

I'm just about to order a PE LW for him as they always look huge on other horses I've seen so I reckon they might fit mine quite well :)

Gorgeous boy! We too have found weatherbeater to be a disapointment. Masta are also a waste of money! Shires (particularly the ones with shoulder darts), and Rhino/Rambo rugs suit our CBxtb and chunky ISH really well. Also found the swish rugs I recently got on the sale to be a nice fit - particularly their purple heavyweight turnout - v pleased!

Mine is a tb but has proportionally to the rest of his body, huge shoulders and a deep chest plus high withers.

I was disappointed with the MW Landa I bought last year, found it much tighter across the neck and chest than the Takas,

PE are nice rugs but for us came down to the knees though if you are finding rugs are a bit miniskirt like then they could be a good option.

I also find FAL good but Mark Todd and Amigo not so generous across the shoulders

Well I have the same problem with my IDx, he's built like a bull!

and would you believe one of the cheapest rugs on the market fits him really well without cutting him in half, it's a cheapo Gallop rug, I've only got the light weight turnout but if they do stable/winter turnouts that fit as well as his light weight then I'll be buying those as well, I only bought it because it was dead cheap and just thought I'd try it, turned out it was a great rug and cheap as chips and another livery went and boughtsome as well.

Thanks all!

I know from experience to avoid Mastas... they are fine for chunky cobby types but the CB proportions are more warmbloody with much greater depth of neck, chest and girth...

Meant to say, I don't really want to spend too much money as he is only 3 3/4 so is still growing!!! He's 17hh+ and Last years rug is 7ft which still fits him but I suspect we will end up in a bigger size. Looking at pics I think JHL might be a good bet although 7ft seems to be their biggest size. All the others look a bit too shallow in the neck dept...

Thanks all!

I have something in similar proportions (neck like a bull has BH!)

He can wear Shires rugs but has to go up a size (if you measure him he's a 6'6'' but a 6'9'' Shires fits him really nicely where a 6'6'' is a bit snug)

His Mark Todd is really roomy round the shoulders, the neck is only just big enough on him though so if you're looking for neck rugs possibly not the perfect choice.

The more expensive Masta rugs fit him absolutely fine but the cheapy ones don't. He has a couple of check tech ones that are a good fit. Really, really loads of room round the neck. Maybe even too much.

Annoyingly, although I suppose not surprisingly, the more I spend the better they seem to fit :(

My horse is very deep chest with a big crest (he was gelded late), like you I found most rugs were too tight and would leave big welts over his withers. I now use Weatherbeta rugs, but buy a 5'9" (he is really a 6') and put the chest extender straps on, result, a happy horse because he can put his head down to graze and doesn't look like a trussed up turkey. It also leaves him lots of room to move freely, I accept it is a bit gappy at the front, I have no mane rub either as I sew a section of silky material over the wither area so that the rug slides over his bane rather than pulling the hair out,

Thanks all!

It's really odd because like I said, the mediumweight in exactly the same rug, but a size SMALLER fits him fine.

Today I aually claimed back a rug I gave to someone at the yard (who hasn't paid me yet) Its a Rhino rug with detatchable neck and it actually fits him suprisingly well plus I bought it for a bargainous £50 new instead of over £110. It's a mediumweight though so doesn't solve my lightweight problem... I feel a massive rug trying on session coming on...

There is a small tackshop down the road which sells some random brand of rugs... can't remember what they are called but they are pretty good quality, reasonably cheap and seem to fit various shapes and sizes pretty well.

I usually pay good money for well fitting and good quality horsey stuff but while he is still growing I really don't want to go overboard with the spending!

Have found Bucas (large neck version or standard with the enlargement front panel) excellent for my CB x TB who looks more CB than TB..

I also found Fal were good but not sure you can get them now..

Have also heard that Mark Todd ones are good for larger shoulders, larger framed horses.

FAL if you can get hold of them. The newer Chieftain one not as good IMHO, made abroad from cheaper fabric and not such a good cut or fit as the original ranges.

Horseware (but only the ones with the V clips at the front) are the only rugs that fit my horse. She is a big girl with big, pointy shoulders and a VERY low-set, thick neck. Everything else is too high on her and strangles her. FAL (Bulldog) almost did the job, but the V clips on the front of her Rambos just give her the extra room for her unusually low-set neck.

I find Weatherbeetas are more a TB-type fit.

I had a Welsh cob before her and the Mark Todds fitted her very well with her huge shoulders. I'd never touch a Shires after having got her one and it having rubbed her to pieces.

The ones I have never tried but would like to are Premier Equine - they are nice and deep and I've used them on a few I've looked after at some point or another.

Have you tried these:

http://www.thebighorseshop.co.uk/welcome.html

specially designed for chunky monkeys

Bought a summer sheet from them for my H/W cob. It was too small, so tried a 6'9 instead of his usual 6'3 and it was still too small. They refused a refund as apparently it was on offer,( although I'd used a direct link to the web page which didn't show that it was on offer.) It wasn't good quality, so got chucked in my tack room.
Bought the Weatherbeeta Kool Coat Airstream Combo and it's been a great fit.

Rambo Xcel are the only turnouts that fit him, (Fal bulldog with the 3'' extra sized neck are good too.)
The Contour stable rug is very deep on the chest and fits perfectly.

PE, Bucas, Shires, Masta, and most Weatherbeeta's don't come close to fitting his stallion crest.

I'm having problems getting rugs to fit my Shire x Tb girl.
For a start, I think she's probably a 7'3", and that limits options. Premier Equine rugs fit her body well, but I can't get the neck straps to close (she has a Shirey neck).
I have looked for Mark Todd, and Rambo Xcel, but the former stop at 7'0" and the latter don't seem to be made any more.
I may have to boil wash her for shrinkage. :D

i got a derby house rug for my yearling last winter.... measured her at 4'3 and got that size... it was cut HUGE!! fits her perfect one year on, and still jimmied to be tighter in the chest than it was designed to be...!

so if you are looking for a cheapy broad rug i'd give a derby house one a go! ;)

there is huge scope to extend the chest. ;) xx

Have you looked at Fal rugs ? They do an extra neck size of 3'', which gives an extra 6 '' overall on the neck. They also offered a bespoke service, which was an additional £25, though this was about 3 years ago, but might be worth contacting them. Its cheaper than having a collection of rugs that don't fit, as I know to my cost. :o
Have a look at the sizing chart on Redrae, I've bought a few rugs from there; http://www.redrae.co.uk/fal_rugs_sizing_chart.htm
