I have just purchased a 15.2hh heavyweight cob and I need to get rugs for her. The last time I had a horse was in 1995 to I'm rather out of date. Back then I had a fabulous NZ for my warmblood which had an elastic neck, was deep-cut and which had a removable fleecy liner. It was fantastic, never slipped, didn't rub and never leaked but I can't remember the name of the make - even if the company still existed.

If anyone knows of any such rugs, please could they let me know?

Failing that, what makes are likely to fit a (very) deep-necked, broad-chested cob?

I reckon I will need NZ, stable and fleece/cooler rugs to start with?

Many thanks

Maybe not a huge help but the Masta high neck turn outs are really roomy round the neck area, could be worth a try?

I'll second Masta - not an overly popular make on here - I have a very broad Welsh Section D and all his winter rugs are either Masta or Funnell Range, have never had a problem with rubs or leaks.

Another bonus is that they aren't the most expensive either.

Enjoy your new horse

shires iv got a very wide cob and tried a range of rugs the shires ones are the only ones that fit her.they have a superb fit and are very generous.iv just ordered one of there stable rugs.

My current brand at the moment is the Shires typhoon range - I have them from 100 to 300 in weight. They have very wide and roomy chests, plenty of shoulder room and a good depth. These are my first choice, plus they are good quality and not too bad on the pocket in price terms.

I also have a couple of old Weatherbeetas and these two have generous neck and shoulders, but not as much chest room as the Shires.

I found the Premier Equine good depth but not enough chest and shoulder room, ditto the Amigos, not generous enough for big necks, ok for the cob when younger but not now as he has filled out.

For stable rugs, I have various types, this one fits my cob very well and is looking as new on its second year and not that pricey. Fleeces - I buy the cheapest I can find as most fit fine.

Our horses are a 17 hand clydesdale and 15.1 gypsy cob, so both are fairly substantial horses

I love Mark Todd rugs - they fit really well on my 15hh Sec D. He has a really big front and these are adjustable which is great.

Have got a couple of Masta's but I don't really like them to be honest. The fit isn't as good as the Mark Todd's and nor is the quality.

One of my boys has a very broad chest and I sometimes have problems with rugs not being wide enough for his chest. I have found that Weatherbeeta are quite generous, as are Mark Todd and Horseware Ireland. He is only 15 hands but he wears 6ft3 rugs because of his wide chest!

Masta, Weatherbeeta, Shires,Mark Todd, Dominick etc, don't fit my H/W tradtional.
The Rambo Excel turnout is brilliant, as are Fal if bought in the extra deep neck size, which gives another 3'' on the neck and shoulders. (good prices for them on the online Eileen Douglas tackshop.)

Fleeces don't fit him, only chuck one over him whilst drying off, though the Masta Contour Stable rug has an extra deep neck and fits quite well.

Thank you all ever so much for your responses.

Following all your feedback, I have tried various makes (with help from fellow owners at my yard and our local saddler) and it's really interesting.

I asked for a FAL but was told that they were out of my girl's size and that they wouldn't be getting more as they were going out of business(?!). The Mark Todd lightweight fits really well over her (wide) bum and is wonderfully deep - deep enough to cover her large barrell but the fit on the front isn't quite right. After contemplating this overnight I've had another look at her (and the way the rugs fit) and some of the other horses at the yard this morning and I have come to the conclusion:

1. Rugs that are "generous in front" generous tend to be generous in the length of the rug from level with the withers forward to the buckles

2. Whereas most horses' necks join onto the chest and then there is a vertical bit before the chest falls away to between the horses' legs, her neck joins onto her chest so low down that the chest is already falling away therefore there isn't much of a "flat" bit for the double straps at the front of most rugs.

3. In addition, although her shoulder isn't particularly upright it certainly isn't as long and sloping as you would expect to see in, say, a thoroughbred.

My conclusion from this is that I need a rug that is designed to come further up the neck then drops down quite straight to the front fastening and, preferably, comes to a "V" at the front rather than a square double strap front - and that the fastening at the and of the "V" is quite low down so that she can get her head down to graze without strangling herself.

So a slight refinement on my original post, do any of you know what rugs come to a "V" in front, quite low down, rather than a square-2 strap type arrangement?

Sorry for the long post :( and many thanks for your help :)

Thought a picture might help...

Rambo used to do an Excel (XL?) rug for broad horses, which had the two clips fastening onto a ring at the front but I don't know if theses are still available. My Highland is 14hh and wears a 6'3" rug due to her width, Masta fit her very well especially the high necked ones.

rhino and rambo have v closure rather than the two straps - i found the same with my chunky pony - mark todd did not fit, masta did not fit, the only ones that have fitted and not rubbed have been rhino and rambo.
