Horse in crime is Wilf... Bucus, fals, horsewears have all been trashed in days.....The only rug he hasn't damaged let alone made un wearable is his lightweight Aimgo. Hes a big boy (Built like a house) So needs 6'9 possible even 7ft rugs. He'll be fully clipped so really needs heavy weight and neck...

We were thinking maybe a 'wug' so he couldn't trash the neck peice?

Anybody recomment any rugs good for big horses? Maybe this is why his Amigo has lasted because its abit like a tent!

Any ideas?

also buy a large stock of liquid cribox and before you use the rug for the first time eat your lunch and then get spraying

absolutely soak the whole of the rug anywhere within reach of teeth

but eat first as you will be tasting the bitter aloes for several hours afterwards !!!

Shires 2000 Denier rugs are good, or I had this really cheap Cameo rug bought for the horse that destroyed a rambo rug in days - its amazing, it just won't die and seems to be made of stuff that would survive a nuclear war!!

Not sure whether you can buy Cameo any more, as we got this one years ago from Andoversford horse sale.

I would certainly spray it like Reynold suggested but I would also see if you can find a cheap rug (my local horse market sells them for cheap and they are brilliant so maybe yours will too) and try it with that. You may find that they fit him just as well, at least then you will not be spending so much on rugs.

Buy good secondhand rugs off ebay, you won't feel half as bad than if he trashed a new one!

Some horses just do hate having rugs, I know someone that doesn't use them, even on their clipped horses but they do use 'pig' lamps instead of normal lights and the horses look amazing; they stand under the lamps with a look of bliss on their faces! Might be worth a try, a bulb isn't very dear and they last for ages.

Can second the Cameo and Rhinegold rugs, they are tough; think they still do Cameo at least there were some at Beeston when I last went a bit ago.

Henry trashed his Rambo two winters ago - he takes a 7'3" so I have a struggle finding rugs to fit him! I bought a heavy weight (winter buster turnout) and a medium weight from

www.premierequineinternational.com

and they have so far lasted two winters and are about to be re-proofed and head into their third! Excellent company, good delivery and good quality rugs - all pretty affordable too!

I wondered what I had let myself in for when I first got my mare as the first rug was ripped to shreds in minutes. I tried various spays etc to no effect. She then spent the next year with a bib on in the stable and a cheap old canvas rug on over the top when in the field.
Since then I have bought Mark Todd rugs and last year bought her a FAL turnout rug for in the stable. She sometimes still takes a pull at the rugs but not as often and the rugs with heavy nylon outsides seem to cope.
