Just wondering if anyone has any good advice or experience for buying rugs for yearlings. I always tend to buy Weatherbeeta and Masta rugs as I find them very hardwearing and reliable but they do tend to be pretty deep in the girth. I'm just about to buy a new rug for my yearling, as I dont have any spares big enough, they're usualy trashed or just not the right size at all. i've not measured him recently but he looks as though he's slighly bigger than his 15hh field friend but I dont want his new rug to drown him. Does anyone know if any particular brands apear shorter in depth which would be more suitable for a youngster?

I cant remember which make mine is, but you have to watch the neck. Because they may fit length ways, but are too big in the neck, because yearlings tend to be smaller upfront.

I have found that masta is the best fit for my girl as they fit her nicely round the neck, although i did have to sitch the surcingle to make them shorter. The weatherbeeta freestyle is ok too. Have tried horseware and was far too big around the neck, and shires were too deep! Bucas rugs don't seem to be too deep but VERY expensive for a yearling!!

I use horseware rugs for my youngsters, but make sure I get the 'wug' style fastening . I find this wraps round their shoulders better and overcomes the problem of the lack of breadth that you find in yearlings. Hope this helps!

Echo that - helped a huge amount when my yearling was still skinny chested. Also found the mark todd rugs with the large adjustments on the front were handy

I found the amigo perfect for my yearling, he's grown out of it now, but will probably get another amigo if he needs it this winter.
