Please what makes are suitable for youngsters with narrow shoulder? Or are we really looking at just pony rugs so what makes have a more suitable cut?

Do such a thing as young stock rugs exist - foal rugs yes but they seem to stop at 5ft. I am needing 5ft6/9 and I really do not want to spend £££ on something that is likely to get trashed easily and something that is only to do a few months now until better weather arrives!

The rug he has been wearing keeps slipping back and now rubbing his chest and base of mane when it is slipping back. They are out in an exposed hill field with no real natural or artifical shelter so although toughies, they need a waterproof rug for the winter. Preferably one without much fill as he is a good doer!

I have an old 5'9 Masta rug that fits my 3yr old perfectly across the chest and shoulders - she is quite narrow at the moment.

Really? I find masta huge! I bought one for my mare (fully grown) and it is huge on the shoulder- she is fairly narrow chested to be fair, but wont buy another for her, certainly not for my youngster who is narrow at the mo.

Trial and error, but I couldnt see past amigo and saxon for the youngster. Rhino are also good, but pricey unless you can fine one second hand.

Honestly, it fits her a dream, and she's quite small across her chest, but because the shoulders aren't so deep it fits great, i only tried it as ive had it for years and its sat at the bottom of my rug pile unused so i thought it'd try it on her. So cost me nothing really.

Ive also heard that Saxon are a good fit for youngsters & narrow horses.

Is there anyone on the yard with a rug in the size you want you could just try for size, maybe that way you could see what brand would suit? That was going to be my next port of call before buying & trying them and having to return them as they didn't fit. :):)

Thanks for the links and I like the idea of the high neck like the suggested Shires one but the 200g fill is too much. My youngster has come through the winter looking too well so not keen to keep him too warm in a vain effort to help limit his weight!

Will see what I can find secondhand if at all possible but don't mind getting a brand new one, if it fits well and is what I want without costing £££

Yes perhaps it may be. I bought a lighter shires one too.

I forgot to mention that another reason I like the nylon lining is that there is no rubbing on angular shoulders. She's sometimes had it on all day and all night and her coat is fine. So whichever you go for, try a choose a nylon lining - also makes the coat super shiny!
