I've still got rugs I bought 9 years ago! Ok, one has just given up the ghost after lots and lots of patching, but my horseware rug that I grumbled about being soooo expensive (

) is still going strong.
How long have your rugs lasted and what brands are they please?
Please also say if your horse is a rug-eater

Dylan is the master of rug-eating!

Just can't seem to have one on for more than 5 minutes without ripping, pulling it and has been none to step out of them when he decides he doesn't want it on any longer!

I have to say - I have only err 2 rugs been trashed in 3 years..
I'm just really bad for replacing rugs because I like shiny new ones

I've found the higher denier Weatherbeata ones last longer (1200 denier compared to 600 denier)

Oh blimey, what a nightmare. A's owner bought him a (rubbish) rug and it lasted ONE night in his stable. Not really his fault though; the front buckle came undone and slid back and he trampled all over it. My UK rugs have all lasted well with him ... until he was being led past another horse who reached out and grabbed rug, ripping it aaaaaaall along the back... Still, better the rug than the Ginger Beastie, eh?

my tesco rug fits my horse best and has lasted longer than practically all of my well known brands. My Mark Todd one lasted 5 seconds and my horseware ireland one.....died after 2 weeks...among many others.... my fly sheet was the best, i put it on, i turned him out, he stood next to a tree and walked backwards into it ripping the whole thing into about 3 different sections....He obviously didn't like it

I have to be very careful what rugs I buy my horse, the stable ones especially have to be tough, none of the shiney silky stuff for him!! Even my sheets have to be tough as he got through 3 in 2 weeks a few years ago!
So I currently buy the Mark Todd Ultimate stable rugs and sheets as they are quite tough but not too expensive as no matter how tough they are I'm lucky to get away with them lasting 2 seasons!

Hi, mine seem to last years. Had a sort out this spring and chucked a few that must have been about 8 years old. Always get Rhino horseware rugs as they dont slip or rub and are soooo light to throw on and dry out really quickly. The ones I have left do have a few small rips in but nothing to be bothered about!

I have two Chaskit Rugs that he has had for 17 years and although a couple of stitching repairs they are excellent and he still wears them
smile.gif

I have his three original 17 year old Lavenham Stable Rugs a 4oz 8oz & 12oz .. 4oz is very thin but still being worn, his 8oz one is in very good condition and still being worn and his 12oz one is packed up away, virtually brand new, as I cannot stand it if I am not able to shove them in the washing machine ..... and it is too big for that
mad.gif

I also have an old Masta canvas NZ that is still usable, but as they are so heavy, it rarely goes on him ..

I have sooooooooooooo many other ones as well, as I am a self confessed rugaholic

Edited ... 17 years ago the Chaskits were over £100 ... I think the one with a tail flap was £159 .... and the Lavenhams where from £69 - £99 if I recall correctly

I soooooo want a chaskit, but you can only get them in Canada (or the US - I cant remember), so cost about £300 with shipping!!!

My mare is a nightmare on stable rugs......she gets bored I think and trashes them on everything. Her NZs are all ok.....her Bucas one is still as new after 3 winters. I bought several Masta ones, which she has worn, but dont fit her properly, so they arent really her fault!! (They are 6'6 if anyone wants a bargain

Bucas turnout is still as new three years old. Horse wears it all winter, in and out, but I do have it washed and reproofed every summer. Stable rugs tend to fall apart after a few years I find, but I do have some turnouts that are going strong six years on.

I've had all of mine for 4 winters. They're mainly Mark Todds (not the most waterproof things in the world but that can be improved with a bit of proofing - the main thing is they're nice and deep and fit G beautifully).

The lightweight turnout has been shredded a few times and stitched up again, the rest have stood up to G.
The washing machine seems to make holes in every fleece i've bought but so far the Equitheme one seems to be doing ok.

I did have a Loveson (being a bit of a cheapskate) which lasted all of 9 days before it ended up in the bin.

Bucas, horseware and all the Mark Todd -except the light weight ones.

The Mark Todd Ultimate stable rugs are great. My firends pony now wears my old horses horseware rugs and they are all 8/9years old.

I've got a 10 year old Rambo Wug - the front clips have had to be replaced and the tail flap is looking a bit frayed but otherwise still going strong. Have also got a Horseware Ireland stable rug thats gotta be 12/13 years old and still in use.

I've have some Weatherbeetas that are about 10 years old!
They are the more expensive ones though. The Landas or what used to be called Outlanders never did last as the linings would all rip but the other ones are brilliant.
None of mine are rug shredders though!

I have an original rambo, that I bought 2nd hand for my horse when she was 8 or 9 yrs old. She is now 26! Its still going, good few patches, and all the straps have been replaced at some time over the years, but still not leaking and cosy warm! I've also an ancient stable rug that has no filling left cos its benn washed so many times, but still ok as a light cover. It must be 20yrs old at least!

The FAL rugs which are heading for their fifth winter are as good as new. Never leak, slip or rub. Well well worth their money. Also they are dual purpose so saves on stables rugs too.

My original rambo rug (the green n red 1st one) is still going strong after 12 years, rhino wug is also great - at least 8 years old! Definately Horseware rugs all the way. You get what you pay for. I bought a cheap (rhinegold?) lightweight off ebay a few years ago and it rubbed my mare terribly afer 1 night - I'm afraid it went back on ebay and she had a rambo again.

She's not a rug wrecker tho, hopefully the new one isn't either!!

Anything up to eight years old.

Vary from Robinsons own brand (stable rugs and turnouts) to Rhinegold, Rhino (Horseware's pony section), Aerborn and Shires.

I don't spend a fortune on rugs beacuse often I can find the same thickness and spec on other rugs. My mare isn't hard on her rugs at all. My filly is outgrowing things rapidly so she doesn't wear them for long enough to trash them.
