I don't think I have ever put a rug on my horse in June before, but there is such an icy blast and it is raining, so I have gone soft and put a rain sheet on my horse. If it is possible I would say that he looked grateful! At least he stopped pacing up and down and staring over the fence towards the kitchen.

There is no shelter from the prevailing wind so it isn't an ideal field, but it is usually fine for the summer months!

I'm still wearing winter clothes! And horse has grown furry autumn coat. Tis mad.
But is allegedly going to get warmer at end of week.

Diabolical weather here for weeks. If the sun is shining theres a cold wind blowing otherwise is rain and cold wind.Rug still in use and extra hay.

Oh dear.

Someone kill me.

It's JUST frickin rain and a bit of wind. They fart worse.

Our old 36 yr has a 300g on, yes, I said a 300g on. She was shivering from hoof to ear this morning, and struggles to keep weight on, so it was unfair to leave her freezing. She was very happy once she had it on.

If the weather improves she'll have her no fill rain sheet on again.

Jesus...there are horses out there emaciated draggin carts in 38 celcius temps...

Plus some workin in minos 18 degrees.

What is wrong with you lot?

my mare has a no fill sheet on tonight, she is carrying no extra weight and is wearing a muzzle, she does looked tucked up after a night unrugged in this weather plus I have a lesson tomorrow and don't want to start with a cold wet backed horse

And do you find it OK that an emaciated horse is pulling carts in 30 Celsius temperatures? ;) She's an old lady with hardly any teeth, who struggles to keep weight on and feels the cold easily, so by leaving her to shake she'd lose weight again. The last time I checked, -2° wasn't particularly warm or normal for June.

Oh so nearly lost our 40 year old pony years ago in unexpected weather exactly like this, at the end of May half term. We'd gone away camping, leaving my Mum in charge. Pony went down in the field and had given up, but my Mum bawled him out and dragged him in to the stable. He nearly didn't make it, but he was fine once he warmed up again.

Think someone needs to put a nice warm rug on tallyho and tuck them up for a good night's kip.

Oh well bless you. What could be worse.

not sure why it worries you so much what others are doing with their horse, my mare does not have a full summer coat and is still growing a clip out, she is groomed with a body brush daily so lacks oils in her coat to repel the water, If she was kept unrugged or groomed less so she had natural protection then she would be unrugged but I have removed her natural defenses from the weather so surely it is up to me to make sure she is not uncomfortably cold because of my choices?

I'll have you know I'm a camping afficionado... even with toddlers.

Thanks madmav you little angel... :)

Twiggy2... you're on a forum!!!! It's my job to worry when I am here.... feel free to drape your horses in whatever you like.... I like to drape ALL my horse in rain, wind, sun you know.... stuff they should probably have access to if you're a PROPER horse person.

Oops, I guess that means I'm not a proper horse person as I rug ours...*Scuttles off into corner*

You do sound very frustrated.Perhaps you need to cool off outside in a lovely blast of wind and rain.

Ha ha your right a forum is a place for worrying but when not in work all my horses have lived out 24/7 unrugged unless elderly /ill or underweight so I am happy that they are out in company but rugged when needed. a tent is not natural shelter in my book.

In fairness I am usually quite anti rug unless there's very good reason. However I would probably have had to put a 100g on the TB tonight if he wasn't already in a fleece due to being on total box rest. It's really cold, and wet and damp, and he would be shivering if naked. The WB is out nude though, he doesn't feel it.
Still doesnt explain why the yard down the road still has mw full necks on in good weather - and I dont believe 10+ horses are all old/thin skinned/blah blah...

Mine are all naked except the newest who's not used to being out at night so he's got a no fill sheet on to keep him dry .
If they are miserable in the morning I will rug them .
Their coats are not looking as they usually do at this time of year .

Hey guys... I have cooled off in wind and rain with the cat.

Apologies for outbursts. None of which I meant.

I am an idiot.

Maybe we are lucky in the SE where I am, temps were 13 degrees at 6am & tho breezy & drizzling the breeze isn't cold.
All 4 fuzzies all looking chirpy this morning at 6am :)
Yes, it blew a hooley last night, but when I woke at 2am & popped out for a min, it was wet but again not cold.
I feel for those or you where the temps have dropped tho x
