What classes as lw/mw/hw?

Does it go by fill e.g. 300gm filling, or denier e.g. 600 denier outer

Filling.

Lw (no fill - 100)
MW (200ish - 250ish)
HW (350+)

Denier is the strength of the outer - starts at 600D (very soft, not ideal for rug rippers and goes all the way up to 2000!)

ETA: the outer can be made from lots of different material depending on the brand, so cant always judge by the denier!

Brill thanks. What are fleeces for? I've always used mine when she's got badly rained on and is freezing (shivering) and I need to warm her up/dry her off quickly. I put the fleece on then her stable rug on top. Is that a bad idea or is that pretty much what they were designed for?

Sorry I'm being a bit of a pest, I know I said only one question

Fleeces are good for drying horses off as you say, They also make a good under-rug or just to wear on their own as a transition between a summer sheet and a polywarm. They are also good for travelling on cool days as they keep the horse warm whilst allowing any sweat to escape.

Hey, I know more than I thought, yippee me.

Now all I need to do is buy 2 x mw turnouts and 2 x hew turnouts. Oh, and one more fleece. I'm mortified to think all I have is 2 x lw (no fill) and I'm well aware I'm going to need a hw for winter, but I'll need a mw before the really bad weather sets in. Now where's that robinsons catalogue...?
