Hello all,

How are you rugging your native golden oldies?

Welsh mare is nearly 27. We're in for colder weather soonish, I have up to 150g for her, I'm wondering if this will be enough for her when it hits 0°c? She is slimmer than in the past, and since she's been on her cushings meds this past year her coat is less thick (but still deffo there!!), however she runs quite warm and until now I've only ever rugged her at 100g a handful of times! What do you guys do?

Thanks 👍 👍

My old girl is in her 200g overnight already. Just to be different, she doesn't grow a winter coat though and forgot she was meant to be a hardy native many years ago!

If yours is normally good in a 100g then I'm sure she'll be toasty in a 150g

This. My 31 year old NF x has only seen a rainsheet for the odd day over the past few years, when it's literally been torrential. He is basically free range 24/7 so has the choice to be in or out.
I thought I’d written this! My 31 yo NF HATES a rug, to the point of snarling and cow kicking when you approach her with a rug. We have good natural shelter and they can get out of weather if required. She’s not often in the shelter tbh.

At least she tells you exactly how she feels! 🤣
My NF definitely knows how to express himself (and has yet to wear a rug!).

My Welsh cob with Cushings had a really rubbish coat for the first couple of years after starting meds. It was thick but lost it's waterproofness, so he got wet and cold whenever it rained. He went up to wearing a 300g in the coldest part of winter, but now hardly ever needs more than 100g

That's good to know, thank you. I have noticed my old mare feels the rain so much more now, I would never have believed she would be wearing rugs in summer a few years ago!

My elderly Exmoor mare is a bit porky at the moment, so I have her in a no fill to keep the wind and rain off. She has pelvis/back end issues, or she wouldn't be rugged at all (they have a shelter).
