Rugs on or not?

I'm undecided about rugging up my horse. He's a good doer, keeps condition well and solidly built. But... He is 28 years old. He lives out in a 7 acre field and is fed twice a day.
Its supposed to get quite cold in next few days which is why I'm not sure.

Does he have hay too ? Is he clipped ?! If hairy I’m sure he’ll be fine. Although it’s cold it’s quite crisp cold for now

Cold is fine. It's cold driving rain that can pull them down. Mine live out permanently and I've just put a rug on my older mare tonight as the cold and rain is on its way from tomorrow.

My oldies 26 & 28 will have 100g on tomorrow for when it rains . Cold I don’t bother but rain I do .

Mine are currently in 100g at night and 0g in day. two are clipped, one isn’t. The two that aren’t clipped - one is on small pen turnout so can’t move around much to keep warm and the other one is my old boy (25) and oldies can’t regulate their temperature as well. I was trying to leave him in a 0g as he is quite fluffy but I noticed he wasn’t actually that warm so upped it slightly. He has arthritis too so needs to keep his joints warm. It does depend on the individual horse though.

My oldie is in a 200g full neck, which just shows they are all different. He might appreciate one if it's raining and windy, but if he's fluffy, their coats usually do the job well.

Both mine are in 100g today. Tomorrow they will be in a lot more as temp is dropping dramatically with a wind chill. Probably both in 200 or 250g.

I've one in 100g and 2 left naked - one is an Arab.

Our 25 year old Welsh is naked, but she’s fat, fluffy and has too much grass .
