Rugs rubbing manes - any tips?

Morning all,

any tips for preventing too much damage to the mane whilst rugged up? I think i read somewhere that keeping the hair smooth with baby oil helps? :)

My boy is currently growing out of a hog, in your experiences how long does a hog take to grow out?

I have heard that rugs with detachable neck covers are better for avoiding rubbed manes than combos with the neck built in. I don't know about the baby oil thing, it might work certainly could cause less friction. If you do end up with a rubbed mane get hold of some megatek. It won't stop the rubbing but it does make the mane grow back a bit quicker and stronger
 
Hi there, I have just ordered EQyss Mega-Tek from tailgator.co.uk (not linked to the company!) after reading a recommendation on here. It's supposed to help the hair grow back, doesn't prevent the problem.
 
My lad has rubbed withers (so not exactly same prob as you) but I searched on here for 'rug rubbing' and many suggested 'bossy's bibs' so I ordered one and it arrived today. They have very good reviews but I can;t say until I give it a few days if it has worked for my old horse.
 
TBH avoid anything full necked or high necked and ensure that the rug actually fits properly. Most rugs I see with peeps having mane problems are actually fitted way too loose at the shoulders (neck hole on the rug brand also being too big for some breeds) and then the rug digs in and causes damage. I also find ones with a fleece edging do less damage.

@Olliecp77 - very good move that stuff is so magic I now use it on my own hair and my hairdresser has been astounded with the results. Bought it when my horse was kicked on the shoulder during turnout with a grumpy mare and had a perfect hairless hoof print 2 weeks before a WH class we really wanted to compete in. Rubbed it on everyday and left it and the hair grew back no probs.
 
The only way to really avoid their mane being rubbed out is to just use standard neck rugs.

I'm very lucky that weatherbeeta combos fit my D brilliantly, and don't rub. He does however suffer with a bit of sweet itch, amongst other things I have found putting a very small amount of pig oil in his mane has stopped him wanting to scratch. Another livery does the same but to stop the neck rubbing her mares mane :)
 
Most of my rugs are fine and don't rub but one gave me a problem at the end of last year for some reason, so I cut up a silk nightie thing that hubby bought me (don't tell him as it was expensive) and stitched a square into the neck cover. No more rubs! yay!
 
Dreaded mane rub!!! my TBs last rug rubbed her shoulders too, replaced with a better fitting rug and invested in a vest for her shoulders, seemed to work. :)
 
Same as Rockchick, I use show shine but also sew a strip of silky under skirt material onto the fluffy but which gies over the withers, the rug then slides over the silky mane and doesn't "grab" the name.
