my arab mare has lost her mane with her rugs, shes currently fully clipped with a neck rug, standard rug, duvet and at night another rug with no neck(shes a wuss and its cold :P)

its rubbed the bottom of her mane off which i am absolutely devestated about. i've tried putting baby oil on it to keep it from rubbing which ive been told work but it hasnt.

what do you guys do to stop rugs destroying the manes?

I had the same problem last year with my pony, not great when i need to plait her up for showing!
She was fully clipped last winter and also a wuss so had all her rugs with necks.
Haven't really found a solution, have just given her a trace clip this year so she can be without necks on to let the mane recover properly.
The only thing i have found which doesn't seem to rub her mane out is a lycra hood (we wash it regularly aswel to stop grease building up).
Not sure if i've helped:o but this is what i'm doing :)

Thanks :D But i don't think Sy would let me put a hood on because shes a bit spesh... lol. She has an epi over something on her neck.. (tinsel :P)

if i find a solution ill let you know!

Keep the neck rugs completely clean - wipe them with a baby wipe every day to remove any grease that has transfered to the rug. It is the grease that is the biggest problem.

That's a really good idea, thanks. I'm having the same problem and it's just too cold (-14 last night) to leave the neck off!
