I was considering leaving my irish cob mare without a rug this winter she grows a coat 3 inches thick and i only lightly hack out at the weekends in winter so wont be sweated up. The reason for this is most rugs ruffle her fur and i end up with (pompoms) when this happens and she gets grumpy. The only rugs that dont ruffle her up are the ones with a silky lining which i,m struggling to find does any one know where i can get one with a silky lining? She is 20 now and perfectly healthy with good grazing in winter and as good natural shelter with hedges and trees would it be too cold for her i worry because she,s not as young as she used to be .

all the fal and rambo rugs have a nylon lining, which i think is what you mean. it slides over the coat and doesn't cause friction.
tbh i'd have a rug on her as she's a bit of an oldie, even if it's just a lightweight or mw one, but then maybe i'm a softie! both the makes above are great, i winter mine out in them 24/7 and they have never rubbed or caused any problem.
 
Hm, she is a cob so should be able to take some weather ...?!
My old mare who was something like a small Danish warmblood never had a rug ever and lived til 28 years tjis is in more continental climate where it gets colder than here too...
My opinion: we tend to rug up too much these days but I am just the same. It has to be what you feel comfy with too at the end of the day
 
I just bought my mare a weatherbeeta joules rug which has the nylon lining, as do the orican and taka. not sure about the landa, but I think it may have ????
 
Thanks for the names of those rugs i do have two that have silky lining but they are a bit tatty and just could not find some more. I dont usually rug her untill it gets a lot colder but want to be prepared.
 
Most rugs now a days have nylon lining. Have a look on ebay - it usually says if it's cotton lining.

I personally would only rug her when it's wet. With a thick cob coat she can keep herself warmer without a rug in cold weather, as long as she's dry.
