Hi All,

I thought it would be interesting to know what rugs (and how many) you have your horses in at the moment during this exceptionally cold and snowy period in the UK.

I know that some places in Scotland got down to minus 20 the other night. I am in the South East and it has got down to minus 7 with a wind chill factor making it feel like minus 12.

My usually 'hot' cob who gets too warm in a heavyweight most winters is in a heavyweight with his lightweight on underneath.

Look forward to hearing about your horses and how wrapped up they are at the moment!

I have a very cold cob - he really feels the cold and to add insult to injury he is also clipped out, poor boy.

He is in a heavyweight full neck under rug. A fleece full neck over the top. Then a heavy weight combi turnout rug on the top. (Oh - and a rug bib - but I don't suppose that counts!) He was cold under that when I brought him in a couple of hours ago (we're in Surrey. Its about -3 at the moment.) I'm going up in a bit to see if he's warmed up in his stable. If not - a thermatex goes on in place of the middle fleece.

Your poor boy! I hope he is warmer when you go and see him tonight.

My cob wasn't particularly warm this morning so I am tempted to put his middleweight on underneath his heavyweight for tonight to make sure he is nice and snug, but thought i might be being an over protective mummy!

My cobs are also not used to this!
They all have heavy mediums (280-300g) with a 100-200g liner each. We are on a very exposed site, though, and the wind chill prevents them from comfortably grazing at the moment, not to mention the snow!

It varies hugely! They're all stabled BTW

Seems like a lot of rugs to me. I have Clevedon bay X, irish draft X and some kinda irish thing, all out 24/7 in 100g fill mostly for wind protection (unclipped). Checking them I see no loss in condition. Always have plenty of hay each.
