what rug should i put on my tb mare?
she keeps heat well but i'm thinking about the winter. Her previous owner said she keeps heat well in the winter. So for a stable rug, would you say a middleweight one?
xx

Depends on what the weather is like where you are. Our current yard is in a valley and about 10 degrees warmer than our old one on top of a moor.

Also depends on what sort of clip and how often you want to have to clip.

I can get away with clipping twice if mine are well rugged but if not you will be doing it every few weeks.

Also two of mine are old and benefit from being kept warm

Well I'll be up in nottingham at college with her and I think it's much colder up there!
I think I'm gonna go for a blanket clip to start with..
Do you think it's worth getting a fleece?
I've got a stable rug and a fleece on my catalogue list but I'm not sure weather to get a fleece cause it's pushing my budget for a turnout rug??

Fleeces are useful for drying them off and for layering if it gets really cold.

I dont buy expensive ones, you can pick them up for £10 on the stalls at horse sales.

why not get one of each rug so that you have the choice and can rug her best to the weather??? shes probably going to need more than a mediumweight in the middle of winter if clipped!!! Mine will be in her heavy weight and if theres ice around probably even mroe layerage than that. My ISH this winter had a duvet thick under rug and a good quality medium weight on at night. I always think a stable is worse than in the field as they cant movce around to keep warm :/

Well If i'm on a tigth budget with having to buy tack and everything, how many rugs and what type do you think I'd need?
Do you not think that I could get the fleece and a medium weight stable rug and a turnout rug so that when its reallly cold i could put the rambo fleece on underneath them?!

Do you think I'd last with a mediumweight stable rug and then the fleece underneath when its extra cold? Then for tunrout I'd just get a heavweight? On a tigth budget as i've had to buy tack and everything too!:)xx

My ISH guys wore at least 2 heavyweights last winter when the temperatures dropped to -17 degrees. I have no problem in putting turnout rugs on in the stable - they are generally warmer than the equivalent weight stable rug tbh.

Fleeces are useful for drying off, but I never put them as an under rug as they stretch and pull against the withers and shoulders, potentially rubbing and causing sores, particularly on the withers.

I genuinely don't mean to be rude, but you say you are on such a tight budget that you can't afford an extra rug..... that's running it a bit tight, isn't it? What if your horse needed a vet urgently for instance? There are many hiddens costs to owning a horse - I would worry that your horse will be cold for the sake of a few pounds.....

For what it's worth, I wouldn't be buying brand name rugs at a tack shop - go online to ebay or equestrianclearance.co.uk and shop savvy - you get way more for your money!

If you are on a tight budget

I would only buy a good quality NZ rugs

as most NZ now you can use them in a stable ie dual purpose I have sold all but the 1 heaviest stable rugs now my horses live in their NZ . Rugs dry better horses keep warm and go out warm in morning, also lees poo stains which can penetrate NZ

i think you should remove your comment.
I have just enough money to buy my horse.
Why don't you try buying a COMPLETE wardrobe.
OH YEAH and paying 500 pounds for it to be transported to london AND BACK UP TO NOTTINGHAM OUT OF YOUR OWN WORK MONEY AT THE AGE OF 16? Yaaaaa. thats what i thought.

Have a look at Premier Equine. If you buy now, you may get a bargain in the sale section. They work by layering, so you buy the outer and then add under rugs underneath that. They can be used inside and outside the stable and are good quality at reasonable prices. The Buster 70X is £59.99 in the sale and can be used with the liners. If you get a 100g and a 200g liner you can add both of these together or on their own.
