Not so much a question, more of a pondering, but as we end the winter, we always have our turn-out rugs washed, repaired and re-proofed. They generally cost about £25-28 each. With the cost of new rugs being nowadays so reduced, I'm wondering if it isn't just simpler to buy new ones.

Do you agree?

Depends on quality I suppose..I think its worth it & do it wiv my Rambo/buccas rugs but DIY it or bin cheaper lightweight ones. Def cost effective to wash indoor rugs yourself!

Depends on the rug you would buy. For me the sort of rug I use for winter turnout is a minimum of £100 - 120 or so at discounted price so definately worth having washed and proofed to re-use for me.

Nope :o

I buy my horses Rambos, that cost a couple of hundred £s a rug, so there's no way I'm throwing them out after one season! In fact, I've never thrown out a Rambo as they seem to last forever. I pay £23 for a professional clean and reproof and think that's quite reasonable with the amount of hours a rug is used in one winter. I also can't stand cheap rugs - complete false economy imo, not to mention many of them are dangerous due to how easily they break.

* from a self confessed Rambo addict * :o

If no repairs are needed I wash myself - good olf hands and knees scrubbing with a dandy brush and/or jet washer if necessary. Done this way you only need to re-proof every 2/3 years which makes it more economic.

I sort of agree. I scrub with a dandy brush and shampoo, by hand. I don't repair, small (less than a foot long) tears generally don't leak anyway. I don't really know how, but the rain seems to go round the tear! Anyway, the horse isn't wet. When they rip beyond use they get replaced. I only ever buy cheap rugs, with barbed wire fencing I find expensive ones tear just as easily so not worth the money.
