Hi everyone, I’ve just got a new horse ? I want to get her a new rug wardrobe as what she came with are very well used! She lives out most of the time, but has access to her stable at all times. What rugs would you say I actually need? My little ponys have too many to even count! But I just want to get her the essentials! Thanks ?

I like to have a 50g 100g 200g and 350g but mine often get clipped and although they are fairly hardy Arabs I like to have a variety, so it really depends on the individual horse really and what you intend to do.

What you need will depend on the horse but to start with I would buy a light weight (0-80g) and a medium weight (200-250g) turnouts and a fleece (which can be used as an under layer or to dry a soggy horse). Once you've had her a while you may decide she needs a heavy weight as well. If she is out most of the time I wouldn't waste my money on a stable rug as breathable turn outs will work in the stable.
The first year I had my horse I had 1 medium weight turn out, medium weight stable rug and a fleece and we were absolutely fine. It would have been nice to have a light weight turnout to pop on for warmer wet days but we managed.

As others have said it depends on the horse, but I like to have rugs with detachable hoods in case of heavy rain. Mine live most of the winter in 100 to 200g, last winter I did not use anything more than that, although I like to have a 300g just in case. For me the brand also depends on the horse. My angelic mare has mainly Rambo because she does not destroy them. The boys have cheap and cheerful rugs because they do not take care of them, but they are stabled at night, and if they were to live out I would probably want something a bit better.

As a bare minimum I like to have a light weight turnout with a fill (50g-100g), a medium weight with a detachable hood and a cooler rug. I can then put the cooler on underneath the medium weight for added warmth.
If you’re planning to clip this year, I’d potentially swap it around to a light weight with a fill, a heavy weight with a hood and a cooler. Prioritise the heavy over the medium. This means that you can then put the cooler under the 50-100g as a close substitute for a medium weight. :)
