Hi all. As many of you know I have a (semi) new gee gee who is a large 5 yr old warmblood. I need to start from scratch with his rugs for the winter and was wondering what I could get away with as a bare mininum (in terms of how many different rugs I need to buy). He will only be turned out a little bit every day (due to restricted winter grazing near London) and will be in a small barn of stables and I am going to give him a hunter clip (legs on). What do you use for your horses at different times of the year and what do you recommend!!??

I would say

LW T/O
MW T/O

a couple of fleeces

LW stable
MW stable

Plus a HW of each if you can stretch to it but you can always stick a fleece underneath if it gets cold.

LW, M/W & H/W turnouts, a multi purpose rug, an under rug, a medium weight stable rug. You could use the under rug and multi purpose under your stable rug and/or turnouts when it gets cold.

I managed last year with my new young horse with 1 full neck MW turnout a light weight turnout a high neck MW stable rug, thick fleece and thin fleece. If you got a MW turnout with removable neck you'd have allot of versatillity and can stck the fleece under if its cold. My horse was only out 4 or 5 half days a week and not when it was wet. Since we've moved and have more turnout I've bought a heavyweight turnout with removeable neck.

My older horse has a rug for every possible weather and temperature senario but its scary when you see the laudrette bill!!!

Thanks! It's gonna be scary when I see the tack shop bill. It has been a ridiculous few months what with new saddle, bridle, bits as he has a funny old mouth (the last one I bought was over £70!), boots, new leather boots for me, new show jacket and hat, and now rugs!! I know once you have it all it lasts for years but it is pretty painful time at the moment!!!

Any suggestions of makes/brands/money saving tips to get me through this first winter? xx

Ebay, altho I've got my new rug from equestrian clearance warehouse, much cheaper than the catalogues. Premier equine stuff is excellent quality altho the prices seem to have gone up a bit so I bought weatherbeeta this time. Not sure what sizes you're after but I got a great HW fleece from a brand called fuel, v similar to posh comfort zone rugs, type it in on ebay, the quality is exceptional and I think the rug was less than £20!!

Just read that back, I sound like a horse clothing obsessive

For one of my horses (who is hunter clipped) who lives out 24/7 (but has stables to go into if he wants), I have (too many!):

HW Combo Turnout (Weatherbeeta Arion. Although just bought a Rambo Duo!)
LW Summer Turnout (Amigo lightweight - the 1200D rug. Brilliant).

Full neck Stable rug (Rhinegold Kentucky - excellent).
Standard neck stable rug (FAL).
LW stable rug (Weatherbeeta). For when its a little too chilly for just a fleece but not so for a proper cosy one!)

Fleece rug (Weatherbeeta). For travelling to shows etc.
Thermatex. For cooling off at shows etc.
Cotton Combo (Kool Coat). For keeping clean in stable night before shows!
Full neck rain sheet (Premier Equine - brilliant). Again, for shows!

Obviously it depends if you plan to compete as you tend to need more rugs for that. If not, then Id say you could just buy a Rambo Duo (LW and HW) and a cooler of some kind. You dont have to have an actual stable rug - you CAN use turnout rugs as they are breathable nowadays.

I would say MW & LW Stable and Turnout plus a few fleeces at least. That way to make a HW TO you can put the LW stable under the MW then the same for the stable rugs, you can also add a few layers with the fleeces for cold nights.

My horse has a full clip and the most he had on was a HW with a LW underneath at night and that was when it was at its coldest. And in the day when turned out he had nothing more than a MW with LW stable underneath it. Oh it did have a full neck aswell.

I do have a Brand New 7ft half neck WB Arion (HW) freestyle looking for a new home. These are quite expensive usually but im looking for quick sale. PM if you are interested.

Hmmm, I am a bit of a rug collector...

Grace (WBxTB) has a light weight stable rug, medium weight stable rug and heavy weight with neck (she has full clip in Nov time), light weight turnout, medium weight turnout and heavy weight turnout with neck.

take a trip to ingatestone and see what they have in their own brand lines. This Saturday is 10% off day!

When I first got my boy I managed to muddle through our first winter with 4 rugs layering as appropriate

Fleece, MW stable LW turnout, MW turnout...... I then bought as appropriate... You wouldn't want to see his wardrobe now!
